The regular season portion of the 2024 schedule come to a conclusion this weekend with the University of Tennessee at Martin softball team playing host to Ohio Valley Conference rival Southeast Missouri for a three-game series. The Skyhawks and Redhawks will open the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 4 at 2 p.m. before concluding the weekend on Sunday, May 5 at 1 p.m.
The Skyhawks (28-20, 13-11 OVC) enter the final week of the regular season looking to solidify their placement in next week's OVC Softball Championship. After clinching a berth in the tournament field a few weeks ago, UT Martin currently sits fifth in the league standings and one game out of a top-four seed. Seeding is important for the Skyhawks as a top-four seed guarantees the squad entry into the double-elimination portion of the tournament field while seeds five through eight will compete in a single-elimination contest to open the event.
UT Martin has won six league series this season with one more three-game slate on the docket. The program currently ranks second among OVC leaders in hits (375), runs (220), RBIs (203) and triples (11) in offensive categories while leading the league in ERA (2.46), shutouts (12) and opponent batting average (.234) in the circle. Defensively, the squad also sits second in fielding percentage (.965).
While the program previously held their Senior Day festivities earlier this season, this weekend's matchup marks the final home games for a decorated senior class. The group of Anna Blanton, Avry Blume, Emily Brown, Katie Dreiling, Kaci Fuller, Annie Gutierrez, Anna Hazlewood, Brooklynn Linneman, Maddi Long and Kiersten Nixon have secured trips to three OVC Softball Championships and won 124 games.
Southeast Missouri (24-22, 18-6 OVC) enters the matchup riding a nine-game conference winning streak. The Redhawks sit just one game out of first place in their quest for back-to-back OVC regular season titles and fourth in six years. The squad used a big April which saw the team go 12-2 overall and 11-1 in league play before the calendar flipped to May.
The two programs have met 122 times previously with Southeast Missouri posting a 74-48 advantage in the all-time series. The Redhawks have controlled the series as of late, winning 11 of the last 12 games against the Skyhawks before being upset in last year's OVC Softball Championship by a final score of 7-0.
