The University of Tennessee at Martin softball program will continue its current four-game homestand this weekend when playing host to Ohio Valley Conference foe Morehead State for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 20 at 1 p.m. before closing out the series on Sunday, April 21.
Prior to Sunday's game, UT Martin will honor the team's 10 seniors. The Skyhawks will recognize the group of Anna Blanton, Avry Blume, Emily Brown, Katie Dreiling, Kaci Fuller, Annie Gutierrez, Anna Hazlewood, Brooklynn Linneman, Maddi Long and Kiersten Nixon for their career achievements.
UT Martin has won four of its six league series this season and currently sits inside the projected OVC Basketball Championship tournament field with three OVC weekends left to play. The Skyhawks rank among OVC leaders in hits (318, first), batting average (.284, second), runs scored (186, second), triples (eight, second), RBIs (171, second), ERA (2.78, second), innings pitched (274.1, second), opponent batting average (.245) and fielding percentage (.963, second).
The Skyhawks (24-18, 9-9 OVC) are looking to build off a series win at Tennessee Tech last weekend and a midweek victory over Rhodes which saw the home squad record their 10th shutout of the season. 10 players recorded base hits against the Lynx on Tuesday afternoon while sophomore Kennedy Brown paced the team with a 3-for-3 afternoon and fellow classmate Jordyn Hustey recorded both the win in the circle with three scoreless frames while going 2-for-3 at the plate with a two-run double.
Morehead State (10-21, 4-14 OVC) is looking to snap a seven-game losing streak and pick up its first win in the month of April. In the last two OVC series, the depleted Eagles have been outscored by a 47-10 margin. Leading the way for the team offensively is Darlene Montoya with a .303 batting average, nine doubles, three home runs and 16 RBIs. The pitching staff is anchored by Addie Stem (5-11, 4.47 ERA) and Jessie Begley (5-7, 5.60 ERA).
UT Martin holds a sizable advantage in the all-time series with a 59-21 margin dating back to the first meeting back in 1992. The Skyhawks have been especially impressive at home against the Eagles where they have defended their nest with a 26-9 record. This weekend's series also marks Morehead State's first trip to Martin since the 2021 campaign.
