
SKYHAWK SOCCER SET FOR HOME OPENER AGAINST APPALACHIAN STATE; GAME TIME NOW 7 PM

MARTIN, Tenn.- Fresh off a season opening win against in-state rival Austin Peay, the University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team will have its home opener this Thursday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. against Appalachian State. The match time was originally set for 5 p.m. but was pushed back two hours due to projected heat concerns.
UT Martin found its first win of the Mike Varga Era last Thursday in Clarksville behind a career-high two goals from forward Makayla Robinson. Nyeemah Prescod-Beckles and Caroline Moore each tallied an assist in the contest while goalkeeper Poppy Bastock had a game-high seven saves while playing the full 90 minutes.
Appalachian State comes into Thursday's match with a 1-1 record on the season. The Mountaineers opened the year at Wake Forest where they narrowly fell 1-0 on Aug. 17. Goalkeeper Kerry Eagleston had six saves in the match, facing 21 shots. In the second match of the season, Appalachian State posted a 3-0 victory over George Mason on Aug. 20. Stephanie Barbosa had two goals while Izzi Wood netted a penalty kick.
The Skyhawks and Mountaineers have met twice before with the most recent meeting being last year, where UT Martin came up just short, 2-1 in Boone, NC. Bastock had seven saves while Robinson fired two shots on goal during last season's matchup. Thursday's match will be the first time UT Martin has hosted Appalachian State since 1999.
