SKYHAWK BASEBALL OPENS FINAL HOMESTAND OF SEASON TOMORROW AGAINST ALABAMA A&M
5/8/2023 2:56:00 PM | Baseball
MARTIN, Tenn. – Winners of seven of its last 10 home games, the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball squad begins its last homestand of the 2023 campaign tomorrow when it takes on the Alabama A&M Bulldogs at 4 p.m. live on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (17-31) will look to take advantage of their familiar surroundings as several UT Martin hitters have excelled at Skyhawk Field this spring. Current OVC Player of the Week Mac Danford is responsible for team-highs in batting average (.453) and slugging percentage (.766) in 64 home at-bats while Caleb Hobson accounts for team-highs of 21 RBI's and 22 runs scored to go along with a .315 batting average in 89 at-bats. UT Martin regulars Will Smith (.379), Hunter McLean (.345), Zac Rice (.319) and Jack Culumovic (team-best five home runs) have also stood out at their home ballpark.
This past weekend, the Skyhawk bats were on fire as the team combined to hit .408 with 53 hits over a three-game series at Ohio Valley Conference foe Lindenwood. Blaze Bell hit a scorching .692 (9-of-13) and was followed by big efforts out of Danford (.533, team-high nine RBI's), Smith (.529, six runs scored), Hobson (.529, four stolen bases) and Andrew Fernandez (.438, team-best three home runs and seven runs scored).
Against the Bulldogs, UT Martin is expected to start senior right-hander Jordan Armstrong (2-5, 7.93 ERA) on the hill. One of his best starts of the season came the last time he toed the Skyhawk Field rubber as he conceded just one earned run over six frames to pick up the victory over Murray State on April 19.
UT Martin is 3-0 all-time at home against Alabama A&M but will look to avenge an 8-7 setback in Huntsville back on March 21. In that game, Fernandez had four hits while Hobson homered to guide the Skyhawk offense while Zach Wager (four innings), Baylor Jones (one inning) and Tristan Walton (0.1 frames) each posted scoreless appearances on the mound. However, the Bulldogs scored seven unanswered runs over their final two at-bats to escape with the win.
Alabama A&M (12-29) enters this game on a nine-game skid, including four straight losses over the weekend at Southwestern Athletic Conference foe Bethune-Cookman. In that series, Chandler Stocking hit .462 (6-for-13) with team-highs of four RBI's and three runs scored. In the matchup against UT Martin earlier this season, Blake Martin went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI's while Brycen Hammonds and CJ Mervilus each drove in two runs apiece.
Redshirt junior right-hander Dustin Hernandez (0-0, 6.92 ERA) is expected to make his 10th appearance and first start of the season for the Bulldogs tomorrow. Lefties Gabe Nicholson (two runs, six strikeouts over 4.1 innings) and Terence Sales (three shutout innings on the way to the win) both performed well against the Skyhawks on March 21.
