The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will wrap up its home slate with a three-game series against new Ohio Valley Conference member Lindenwood this weekend. The Skyhawks and Lions will square off for a single game on Saturday, Apr. 22 at 3 p.m. before wrapping up the series with a doubleheader on Sunday, Apr. 23 beginning at noon.
The Skyhawks will honors members of their team all weekend as Saturday's contest serves as Academic Recognition Day. Then on Sunday, the squad will recognize members of its graduating class prior to first pitch, including Kaitlyn Kelley, Kallie Pickens and Shyanne Sheffield.
UT Martin currently sits in third place in the league standings with a 17-19 overall record and 10-7 league mark. Lindenwood enters the matchup sitting in seventh place with a 5-9 record in its inaugural season in the OVC while boasting an overall mark of 13-24. While the Skyhawks have already secured a berth in the OVC Softball Championship, the Lions are still looking to clinch its position.
The Skyhawks have won four of their last five league series while leading the OVC in home runs (39) and fielding percentage (97.9 percent). The squad also ranks second amongst league leaders in batting average (.281) and slugging percentage (.444).
Junior outfielder Kaci Fuller leads the league with a .433 batting average while tallying eight doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 28 RBIs. Meanwhile in league play, the tandem of Kaitlyn Kelley and Katie Dreiling have raked against OVC foes by combining for nine home runs and 19 RBIs in 17 games. Kelley is hitting .382 in league action with six doubles, five home runs and 12 RBIs while Dreiling has notched a .370 average with four home runs and seven RBIs.
Dreiling has also excelled in the pitching circle in OVC play with a 6-3 record and 1.31 ERA in 42.2 innings of work. She has limited opponents to a .164 batting average while allowing just eight earned runs. Brooklynn Linneman has posted a 6-4 record with a 2.56 ERA in a team-high 87.1 innings of work.
Lindenwood enters the weekend looking to snap a seven-game losing streak as it enters the final stretch of the regular season with three weeks remaining. The Lions rank last in the OVC in batting average (.232), home runs (four) and RBIs (88) while sitting second lowest with a 5.55 team ERA.
The Lions are paced by Irelynn West who boasts a .364 batting average with 15 doubles and 16 RBIs. Mya Bethany ranks second on the team with a .290 batting average while adding five extra-base hits and 11 RBIs. The pitching staff is led by Amanda Weyh (5-9, 3.98ERA) and Avery Wapp (4-6, 4.50 ERA) with 155.2 combined innings pitched.
This weekend's series marks the first meeting between the two programs.
