MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball squad puts the finishing touches on a five-game home swing tomorrow when it takes on the Murray State Racers at Skyhawk Field. First pitch time has been bumped up to 2 p.m. from its originally scheduled time of 6 p.m.
UT Martin (11-26) will look to complete a season sweep over Murray State as the Skyhawks claimed a 5-2 road victory back on Feb. 21. In that game, Zac Rice went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two stolen bases and a pair of RBI's while Blaze Bell, Jack Culumovic, Alec Beaman and Caleb Hobson also had multi-hit days. On the mound, J. Henry Hobson earned the victory after allowing only one run over six frames while Campbell Cleveland locked down a save following scoreless relief innings out of Will Smith and Colin Millar.
This past week, UT Martin hit .336 while slugging .657 over four games – outhomering the opposition by a 10-5 margin. Rice hit an even .500 (7-for-14) while Mac Danford was named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week after hitting .471 with three homers. Hunter McLean (.462, team-high six runs scored), Slade Taylor (.455, five runs scored in three games), Caleb Hobson (.353, six RBI's) and Culumovic (.313, team-best eight RBI's) also had strong weeks at the dish.
The Skyhawk bullpen also performed well last week, posting a 3.92 ERA over 18.1 frames. Tucker Reed (four innings over two appearances), Trey Ricko (one appearance) and Millar (one appearance) all recorded 0.00 ERA's while Baylor Jones and Zach Wager each threw three innings apiece with matching 3.00 ERA's in two appearances.
Senior righty Jordan Armstrong (1-4, 8.93 ERA) will get the nod on the hill for UT Martin against the Racers as it will be his team-best 10th start of the 2023 campaign. He will look to continue an upward trend for the Skyhawk pitching staff as UT Martin boasted a 30:9 strikeout-to-walk ratio in its four games last week.
Murray State (19-17) enters a home contest against Alabama A&M this evening on a three-game winning streak, sweeping Missouri Valley Conference foe Illinois State over the weekend. Virginia Tech transfer Dustin Mercer hit .526 (10-for-19) with three home runs and nine RBI's while going 3-for-3 in the stolen base department last week.
In the matchup against the Skyhawks earlier this season, the Racer trio of Riley Hawthorne, Charlie Corum and Cade Sammons each had two hits apiece. Three relievers (Matt Boynton, Ethan Lyke and Cade Brown) combined to concede just one earned run over seven innings of work.
Redshirt junior lefty Allen Roulette (1-0, 2.92 ERA) is expected to make his ninth appearance (second start) of the season on the mound for Murray State. Ben Krizen has been a workhorse for the Racers out of the bullpen, posting a 1.93 ERA with five saves in a team-high 18 appearances.
