University of Tennessee at Martin softball team returns to action at Bettye Giles Field this weekend when playing host to Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee State for a three-game series beginning on Saturday, March 25.
The Skyhawks and Tigers will square off for Game 1 on Saturday, March 25 with first pitch slated for 2 p.m. The two squads will then play a doubleheader on Sunday, March 26 beginning at 1 p.m. with the finale to follow.
UT Martin (9-13, 2-3 OVC) is looking to build upon last weekend's OVC sweep at SIUE. The Skyhawks picked up their first road sweep at SIUE in program history while stringing together a three-game winning streak before dropping a pair of midweek contests to Marshall (4-1) and Bellarmine (1-0) on Wednesday afternoon in Louisville, Ky.
Entering the weekend riding a hot-streak is graduate infielder Kaitlyn Kelley. Over the past four games, Kelley has posted a .538 batting average with five doubles, a home run and five RBIs. Joining in the action is junior outfielder Kaci Fuller who is also off to a fast pace this season with a .494 batting average – which ranks ninth nationally – while also pacing the team with six doubles, two triples, six home runs and 23 RBIs.
The Skyhawks feature three prominent pitchers in their rotation with Brooklynn Linneman (4-4, 2.73 ERA) pacing the squad with 51.1 innings of work while limiting opponents to a .218 batting average. Katie Dreiling (4-3, 4.56 ERA) has been strong in recent action, allowing just one earned run and zero walks in her last 9.1 innings. Meanwhile, junior Kiersten Nixon (0-5, 3.96 ERA) is looking for her first win in the circle.
Tennessee State (13-12-1, 4-1 OVC) has opened up league play on a hot start by winning four of five contests against Lindenwood and Southeast Missouri. The Tigers boast three players with a batting average over .300 on the season while Onnika Spencer paces the team in most categories, including batting average (.329), doubles (seven), home runs (five) and RBIs (19). The pitching staff is anchored by Caitlyn Manus (10-8, 3.23 ERA) who has tossed eight complete games in 94.2 innings of action.
UT Martin has held a strong grasp on the all-time series against Tennessee State with the squad boasting a 71-7 all-time mark in a matchup which dates back to 1984. The Skyhawks have won 17 consecutive matchups against the Tigers with the last loss coming in the 2013 campaign.
