MARTIN, Tenn. – Fans of the University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian program can catch their first glimpse of the 2023-24 squad this week when the Skyhawks open their home schedule with a pair of meets. UT Martin begins Eastern College Athletic Conference play against South Dakota State on Thursday, Oct. 12 before hosting No. 2 Auburn on Friday, Oct. 13. Both meets will start at 10 a.m. at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex.
The Skyhawks have won six straight matchups against South Dakota State – three of which came during the 2022-23 campaign alone. Meanwhile, Auburn will be making its first visit to the UT Martin campus since Sept. 19, 2019.
Ranked No. 10 in each of the first four National Collegiate Equestrian Association polls, the Skyhawks will be back in action for the first time in almost two weeks after opening the season against a pair of top-10 opponents. UT Martin fell 14-4 at then-No. 8 South Carolina on Sept. 29 before falling by a 13-5 margin at No. 6 Georgia the following day.
Seven different Skyhawks have competed in fences so far, led by victories out of Elizabeth Becker and Kate Mills. A freshman out of Charlotte, NC, Mills tops the squad in fences scoring average (82.0) via a career-best ride at Georgia.
The same five riders have comprised the UT Martin flat lineup in each of the first two meets of the season. Sydney Hott corralled MOP accolades at South Carolina while Haley Kane, Bridget Vieau and Sophia Sundem have also nabbed victories in the event. Hott's 82.0-point scoring average ranks atop the team.
In horsemanship, five riders have represented the Skyhawks in the lineup as Emma Schaefer and Lexi Bailey have each secured wins. Kate Davis' 72.8 scoring average leads the way for UT Martin.
Five Skyhawks have graced the reining lineup in the early portion of the season. Logan Putvinski is responsible for a win and a team-high 69.3 scoring average while Bailey has registered a pair of ties so far in 2023-24.
During Friday's meet, fans can donate to the UT Martin athletic department and Zeta Tau Alpha Delta Mu collaborative "Pink Weekend" initiative by purchasing an exclusive UTM Athletics shirt or providing specifically requested items for a chemo care kit. For more information, click here.
