DOVER, Del. – Junior Abby Tibbits delivered her third career MOP performance for the University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian squad but the Skyhawks were narrowly edged out by a 9-6 margin to Baylor at RedStone Ranch.
An Elbert, Colo. native, Tibbits posted a score of 71.25 in reining to win by a full eight points over her head-to-head competitor. It marked her seventh victory in 15 career starts since the beginning of the 2025-26 campaign.
UT Martin found its most success in fences today, claiming three of the four points in that event. The Skyhawks also went 1-2-1 in horsemanship while adding one point apiece in flat and reining.
In fences, Kate Mills and Audrey Morris each scored team-highs of 78.5 points en route to victories. Averey Pritchard was also victorious with a score of 76.5 (good enough for a 10-point margin of victory) while Kathleen DeGenova's 75 completed the scoring for UT Martin.
Ava Newsom paced the Skyhawks in horsemanship as her 71.5 chalked up a point for UT Martin. Ruby Gunderson's team-best 73.5 tied her head-to-head opponent while Ava Jo Glenn (73) and Olivia Wynn (71.75) put up fights as members of the Skyhawk starting lineup.
Lydia Jordan (82.5) topped her competitor by seven points to claim a victory in flat. Making her first appearance since the 2025 National Collegiate Equestrian Association Championships, Payton Lussen returned from injury to post a career-best 84.5 points. Shelby Davis and DeGenova concluded the scoring with 83 and 74.5 points, respectively.
Tibbits' MOP effort was the highlight for UT Martin in reining as Elise Mason (67.5), Claire Carpenter (55.5) and Stevie Brown (tough-luck no-score) also earned starts in the Skyhawk season opener.
UT Martin gets right back after it tomorrow, taking on Eastern College Athletic Conference rival Delaware State at 8:30 a.m. CT.
