DANBURY, Conn. – For the second time in her University of Tennessee at Martin career, senior Ava Newsom has received Eastern College Athletic Conference Rider of the Week honors in horsemanship.
Newsom, who also won this award on Oct. 16, 2023, was one of two Skyhawks to go 2-0 in head-to-head action during UT Martin's season-opening weekend in Dover, Del. The Skyhawks put up a fight before narrowly falling 9-6 in a neutral-site matchup against Baylor on Friday before a tight 10-6 setback against host Delaware State the following day at RedStone Ranch.
Hailing from Lebanon, Ind., Newsom began her 2026-27 campaign with 71.5 points aboard Buckshot, defeating Baylor's Taylor Eller by a 5.25-point margin. On Saturday, Newsom emerged victorious by 0.5 points over Delaware State's Madison Wojcek behind a team-best score of 75.25 on Maverick.
Newsom averaged 73.4 points on the weekend and now owns nine career horsemanship victories plus a pair of MOP's at UT Martin.
The Skyhawks are idle until a pair of ECAC matchups later this month, traveling to Brookings, SD for league tilts against South Dakota State (Friday, Oct. 30) and Minnesota-Crookston (Saturday, Oct. 31).
