
UT MARTIN SOFTBALL PLAYS HOST TO OVC CO-LEADER BELMONT FOR THREE-GAME SERIES THIS WEEKEND

The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will return home this weekend with a three-game homestand against one of the Ohio Valley Conference leaders when playing host to league-unbeaten Belmont. The Skyhawks and Bruins will square off for a single game on Saturday, Apr. 2 beginning at 2 p.m. on ESPN+. before wrapping up the series on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at noon. The Skyhawks (18-11, 3-3 OVC) will look to continue their hot play at home where they have posted a 7-0 mark at Bettye Giles Field. UT Martin currently ranks amongst league leaders in runs scored (177, second), RBIs (158, second), slugging percentage (.455, second), stolen bases (40, second), hits (258, third), home runs (24, third) and on-base percentage (.375, third).
Sophomore Kaci Fuller leads the team with a .425 batting average while tallying six extra base hits and 14 RBIs on the year. Graduate outfielder Paige Clark paces the team with 37 hits while boasting a .375 average and leading the team with 27 runs, 37 hits, three triples and 22 stolen bases. Clark recently became the fifth player to join the program's 200-hit club while sitting second all-time with 92 career steals.
The pitching tandem of Alexis Groet (7-5, 2.25 ERA) and Erin Gallagher (5-2, 2.15 ERA) have started the bulk of the time this season for the Skyhawks in the circle. Groet paces the team with a .187 opponent batting average in 65.1 innings of work while Gallagher has walked just 18 in 52.0 innings. Katie Dreiling has proven to be strong out of the pen, holding opponents to a .107 average in 16.2 innings of work.
Belmont (17-7, 8-0 OVC) enters the weekend riding an 11-game winning streak including sweeps of Austin Peay, SIUE and Tennessee State during OVC play. The Bruins lead the league in batting average (.325), slugging percentage (.461), on-base percentage (.405) and steals (67).
The Bruins are led in several offensive categories by Cheyenne Cavanaugh who paces the team with a .418 batting average while tallying 22 runs, 33 hits and 12 RBIs along with 20 stolen bases. Kristen Green is another strong contributor with a .353 average while tallying four doubles, four home runs and a team-high 24 RBIs. Meanwhile in the circle, the squad is led by Emma Summers with a 7-2 overall mark along with a 1.82 ERA in 61.2 innings of work.
The two teams have previously met 43 times in the series history with UT Martin holding a 32-12 advantage dating back to the first meeting back in 1999. The Skyhawks won two of three games in Nashville last year – including an 11-inning marathon which Kaitlyn Kelley went 4-for-5 in with two doubles, a home run and four RBIs while Groet pitched seven innings of scoreless relief while striking out 10 en route to OVC Player of the Week honors for the pair.
