3/22/2022 2:27:00 PM | Softball
The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will wrap up its five-game homestand with a non-conference doubleheader against SWAC member University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff on Wednesday, March 16. First pitch from Bettye Giles Field is scheduled for 1 p.m. with Game 2 to follow afterwards.
The Skyhawks (16-7) enter the matchup hot off a sweep of Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee Tech last weekend, marking the first opening weekend sweep of a league opponent since 2014. UT Martin found a lot of success last week as a whole by going 4-0 while boasting a .330 batting average along with bashing three home runs and driving in 22 RBIs.
UT Martin is led offensively by sophomore Kaci Fuller who paces the team in batting average (.452), on-base percentage (.507) and slugging percentage (.613) while graduate outfielder Paige Clark has team-highs in hits (31), runs (22) and stolen bases (15). The slugging tandem of Katie Dreiling (.325, 5 HR, 18 RBIs) and Kaitlyn Kelley (.358, 4 HR, 21 RBIs) have combined to hit nine home runs on the year.
The pitching staff is led by Alexis Groet (7-3, 1.60 ERA) and Erin Gallagher (5-1, 2.20 ERA) atop the team leaderboard. Dreiling (0-1, 3.82 ERA) has also become a valuable arm out of the bullpen while Seeley Layne (3-1) is coming off a perfect two inning performance to pick up a win against Tennessee Tech.
UAPB (2-19) recently snapped a 12-game losing streak with a shutout victory over Southern to notch its first SWAC win of the season. The Lady Lions are led by Samaria Jackson who leads the team in nearly every offensive category including batting average (.378), runs (six), triples (two), home runs (two) and RBIs (six). Sydney Green (1-6, 3.72 ERA) leads the pitching staff with a shutout victory on the year in 47.0 innings of work.
The two teams have met four times previously with UT Martin winning each of the contests – including a Feb. 12 matchup in the Lady Demon Classic with the Skyhawks coming away victorious 9-0 in five innings.
