The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team opens its 20th season of competition in the Ohio Valley Conference with a three-game series against Tennessee Tech at home this weekend. The Skyhawks and Golden Eagles will open the series on Saturday, March 19 at 2 p.m. before returning on Sunday, March 20 with a doubleheader beginning at Noon at Bettye Giles Field. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
UT Martin opens league play with a 13-7 record after winning eight of its last 10 games. During that span the Skyhawk offense has really found its stride by scoring an average of 7.5 runs per game while the pitching staff has posted an impressive 2.11 ERA – including a 1.80 mark by their starters.
The Skyhawks currently rank 19th nationally in scoring (6.6 runs per game) and 23rd in batting average (.319) while lead the OVC in batting average, slugging percentage (.486) and hits allowed (98). The team also ranks amongst league leaders in on-base percentage (.386, second), earned run average (2.80, second), opponent batting average (.210, second), runs scored (132, third), RBIs (119, third), hits (175, fourth) and steals (24, fourth).
Sophomore Kaci Fuller leads the team with a .423 batting average which ranks fifth in the league. The veteran pair of junior Kaitlyn Kelley and graduate Paige Clark both boast a .380 batting average with a team-high 27 base hits. Kelley is one of three Skyhawks with three home runs while pacing the team with 18 RBIs. Clark has excelled out of the leadoff spot where she has tallied eight extra base hits along with nine RBIs while ranking second in the OVC with 14 stolen bases this season and third in program history with 84 in her career.
The pitching staff is anchored by the starting tandem of Alexis Groet (6-3, 1.29 ERA) and Erin Gallagher (4-1, 2.12 ERA). Groet currently ranks amongst league leaders in opponent batting average (.164, first), earned run average (1.29, second), strikeouts (49, seventh) and wins (six, seventh) while Gallagher sits third in hits allowed (29), fifth in opponent batting average (.218), sixth in earned run average (2.12).
Tennessee Tech enters league play boasting a 17-6 record and riding an eight-game winning streak. The Golden Eagles featured a potent offense which leads the OVC in runs scored (149) and RBIs (131) while ranking second in home runs (20) and slugging percentage (.471).
The Golden Eagles are highlighted by one of the league's top performers in Mackenzie Fitzgerald who boasts a .439 batting average with nine extra base hits and 13 RBIs while leading the OVC in runs scored (31), hits (35), triples (three) and stolen bases (15). Haeli Bryson is also tops in the league with 28 RBIs while her five home runs rank third. On the pitching side, Tech features three solid starters in Alyssa Arden (9-4, 2.85 ERA), Tyler Erwin (6-1, 2.60 ERA) and Bryson (2-1, 3.61 ERA) as the team posts a 3.05 ERA on the season.
The long-time rivals have met 81 times previously with Tennessee Tech holding a 47-34 advantage in the series. UT Martin won the season series last year by winning two of three games in Cookeville on the final weekend of the season. The Skyhawks have found recent success against the Golden Eagles by winning 10 of the last 11 games dating back to the 2016 season.
