MARTIN, Tenn. – Fresh off a scrappy effort on the road against the Ohio Valley Conference leader, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team faces a quick turnaround as it opens a two-game homestand against the SIUE Cougars. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is set for 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 24.
This contest serves as the middle game of an active stretch for the Skyhawks (6-13, 2-5 OVC) as they are playing five times in the span of 10 days. This game was originally scheduled for Jan. 1 but was postponed under OVC health and safety protocols.
UT Martin is coming off a slim 74-66 setback at Murray State on Saturday. In that outing, the Skyhawks held the Racers - who entered the game ranking in the top-15 nationally in field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage - to 35.4 percent shooting overall, including 3-of-27 (11.1 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. Bernie Andre was responsible for his first double-double of the season (team-highs of 17 points and 11 rebounds) while KJ Simon (16) and KK Curry (10) also registered double figures in the scoring column for UT Martin.
Although the Skyhawks lead the all-time series against SIUE by a 14-11 margin, the Cougars have won three straight head-to-head matchups - including each of their last two visits to the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.
SIUE (7-11, 1-4 OVC) is also coming off a respectable performance, falling 77-74 at defending OVC champion Morehead State (who is one of two undefeated teams atop the league standings with Murray State). The Cougars boast one of the best defenses in the OVC, ranking second in the league in defensive field goal percentage (.414), defensive three-point field goal percentage (.323) and rebounding (38.3 per game).
Ray'Sean Taylor, who only trails Duke's Paolo Banchero for the title of nation's leading freshman scorer, compiled 26 points, six steals, four assists and two rebounds to lead SIUE at Morehead State. The rookie ranks second in the OVC in both scoring (17.1 points per game) and free throw percentage (.804).
Chris Brinkley will broadcast the game live on ESPN+ and locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links, as well as a link to follow along with live stats, are located at the top of the webpage.
