
SKYHAWK BASEBALL HOSTS TENNESSEE TECH FOR FINAL HOME GAMES OF SEASON; SENIOR NIGHT SET FOR FRIDAY

MARTIN, Tenn. – The 2021 University of Tennessee at Martin home baseball slate comes to a close this weekend as the Skyhawks will play host to in-state Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee Tech. The series will start on Friday, May 14 with a single game at 5 p.m., followed by a doubleheader that will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 15.
Nine UT Martin student-athletes will be recognized before the series opener on Friday as part of a Senior Night pregame ceremony. Winston Cannon, Blake Daniels, Billy Edwards, Sam Folks, Andy Horne, David Hussey, Jefferey O'Doherty, Matthew Shunk and Nick Wohlbold will be honored for their career contributions. This group has combined for 195 games played, 611 at-bats, 129 hits, 78 runs scored and 58 RBI's at the plate as well as 42 victories, 317 appearances, 21 saves, 859 innings and 815 strikeouts on the mound.
Hailing from Cookeville, Tenn., Cannon is the Skyhawks' all-time leader with 53 games started, 292.2 innings pitched and 269 strikeouts. He also ranks third all-time with 18 victories while ranking 10th in school history with 62 appearances. In the classroom, he boasts three OVC Medals of Honor for a perfect 4.0 Grade Point Average and is a four-time recipient of the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Daniels is a three-year member of the UT Martin program as the left-handed hitter out of Marked Tree, Ark. has started in 97 games. He has stroked 31 extra-base hits in his career, including a team-best nine doubles this spring. He ranks third on the team with a .275 batting average and boasts eight multi-hit games in 2021.
A member of the program since 2018, Edwards has logged 66 starts in a Skyhawk uniform while appearing in 85 games overall. The infielder from Lakeland, Tenn. pieced together six multi-hit games as a freshman and also drove in a career-best four runs that season against OVC rival SIUE. Academically, he earned an OVC Medal of Honor for a perfect 4.0 GPA as a sophomore and has been named to the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll on three separate occasions.
A left-handed pitcher out of Franklin, Tenn., Folks ranks in the top-10 in UT Martin history in games started (43, third), strikeouts (208, fourth), innings pitched (259, fifth) and appearances (63, ninth). This season, he was named OVC Pitcher of the Week on April 5 and leads the conference with 22 strikeouts looking. As a junior in 2019, he became the first Skyhawk to throw a complete game shutout since 2006 when he accomplished that feat against OVC rival Southeast Missouri.
Horne has been a part of the Skyhawk program for the past three seasons after transferring from Hiwassee College. The right-handed hitting catcher from Columbia, Tenn. has been a team leader on and off the diamond, garnering OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll accolades during the 2020 campaign.
Hailing from Minter, Ala. is Hussey, who ranks fourth in UT Martin history with 74 appearances and eighth all-time with five saves. He has sported a 3.08 ERA over 25 combined appearances over the last two seasons and just last month he was named as one of just 65 finalists for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award. Off the field, he has chalked up OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll accolades in three straight seasons.
Making 52 appearances over the last four seasons is O'Doherty, a right-handed pitcher from Omaha, Neb. He has whiffed 65 batters over 64 innings as a Skyhawk and topped the OVC in appearances during the abbreviated 2020 campaign. He was the winning pitcher in UT Martin's victory over No. 30 ranked South Alabama on Feb. 21, 2020 – tossing two shutout frames.
Shunk joined UT Martin last season after transferring from Savannah State. This season, the right-handed reliever out of Burleson, Texas ranks second on the squad with a 3.12 ERA over 11 appearances, notching a victory in the series finale at Grambling State on March 28. His 13.5 strikeouts-per-nine-inning average is the best on the squad in 2021.
The program's first-ever Preseason All-American when he accomplished that feat in 2020, Wohlbold is the Skyhawks' all-time saves leader with 16. The righty from Columbia, Mo. transitioned into a starting role midway through this season and was named OVC Pitcher of the Week on April 12. In the classroom, he has collected one OVC Medal of Honor for a perfect 4.0 GPA as well as three consecutive mentions on the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Tennessee Tech (18-22, 11-13 OVC) saw its four-game winning streak snapped last night with a narrow 10-8 setback at No. 4 Tennessee. The Golden Eagles swept then-OVC leader Morehead State last weekend, winning three consecutive one-run decisions. Reigning OVC Player of the Week Ed Johnson (.324 batting average, team-best 36 runs scored), Brett Roberts (team-highs of .327 batting average and 16 stolen bases), Cody Littlejohn (team-high 11 home runs) and Preseason OVC Player of the Year Jason Hinchman (seven homers) pace Tennessee Tech offensively. On the mound, Ty Fisher (5-4, 3.82 ERA) has started 10 games while Tyler Sylvester (0-5, 6.18) has logged a team-best 11 starts. Grant Phillips leads the team with a 3.65 ERA to go along with a 1-0 record and a pair of saves out of the bullpen.
