MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer squad begins the 2020-21 season under the lights of Skyhawk Field on Tuesday, March 2 when it hosts Eastern Illinois at 5 p.m.
UT Martin is 6-1-2 over the last nine matchups against the Panthers, having not lost to Eastern Illinois at home since 2011. Four of the last six meetings have gone into overtime, including two straight double overtime scoreless draws.
Skyhawk goalkeeper Erica Myers has excelled in her career against the Panthers, conceding just one goal while snatching 10 saves in 310 minutes in net. Offensively, Bella Roberts scooted in the game-winning goal in the 85th minute of the 2017 victory against Eastern Illinois – marking the first of 10 career goals for the senior out of Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Head coach Phil McNamara returns 16 players and eight starters from the 2019 UT Martin squad that finished third in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 6-2-2 mark (8-6-5 overall). That includes 2019 All-OVC selections Maria Castaldo (first team, ranked third on the team with 1,639 minutes played as a freshman) and Roberts (second team, 14 points off six goals and two assists).
The upperclassman trio of Jill Hildreth (third in the OVC with eight goals in 2019), Alice Adams (fourth in the OVC with five assists plus four goals) and Hendrikje Baurmann (14 points, five goals and four assists) provided offensive punch at forward while Catey Hunt (two goals, two assists) logged 16 starts at midfielder as a freshman a year ago.
Defensively, Castaldo joins the formidable senior tandem of Kamryn Chappell (54 career starts, 5,055 minutes played) and Jacalyn Schubring (34 consecutive starts in the last two years) as returning starters.
Myers led the OVC with four shutouts in 2019 and was spotlighted as one of the league's 11 "Players to Watch" going into her senior campaign. The 5-10 Holland, Ohio native has made 51 career starts and ranks second all-time in school history in minutes played (4,866:20), victories (24) and shutouts (13).
Eastern Illinois is coming off a 4-10-4 season in 2019, including a 2-5-3 mark in OVC play. Head coach Jake Plant enters his third year at the helm as he returns nine letterwinners and five starters from a 2019 squad that tied for the OVC lead with fewest goals allowed (26). Senior midfielder Itxaso Aguero was named an OVC "Player to Watch" this preseason after all three of her assists came against league opposition last season. Haylee Renick's seven points (three goals, one assist) lead the Panthers' offensive returners.
