ASCENDING SKYHAWK MEN'S HOOPS SQUAD SQUARES OFF AGAINST AUSTIN PEAY FOR THE SECOND TIME IN FOUR DAYS
2/9/2021 5:38:00 PM | Men's Basketball
MARTIN, Tenn. – For only the fourth time in University of Tennessee at Martin history, the Skyhawks will face the same Ohio Valley Conference opponent in back-to-back games as the UT Martin men's basketball team clashes against the Austin Peay Governors on Thursday, Feb. 11. Tipoff time from Clarksville, Tenn. has been pushed up to 3 p.m. to try and avoid inclement weather in the surrounding area.
This marks the first instance where the Skyhawks have met a team in consecutive games during the regular season as the other three times have been the regular season finale followed by a matchup in the OVC Tournament. This meeting is the first for a back-to-back league opponent since UT Martin defeated Murray State twice (Feb. 25, March 3) at the tail end of the 2016-17 campaign.
The Skyhawks (7-11, 5-9 OVC) are coming off an impressive 76-75 home victory over the Governors on Monday. In that game, UT Martin built up a 12-point halftime advantage but found itself trailing by five points with under 90 seconds to play. Ajani Kennedy then put the team on his back, drilling the game-tying and game-winning trifectas to give the Skyhawks their first win of the season when trailing with two minutes to go (was previously 0-11).
Kennedy's 22 points equaled a career-high he had previously set while playing at UC Riverside during the 2018-19 season. Eman Sertovic (3 three-pointers, 4-for-4 from the free throw line) and Vinnie Viana (5-of-7 shooting in 14 minutes) also set career-highs with 15 points apiece for UT Martin, who was a perfect 11-of-11 from the charity stripe.
Austin Peay (11-8, 7-6 OVC) returns to the Dunn Center for the first time since Jan. 30 after a four-game road swing ended with a pair of one-point setbacks. Terry Taylor, who piled up a majority of his 17 points and 12 rebounds in the second half against the Skyhawks on Monday, is the only NCAA Division I player to rank in the top-10 nationally in scoring (21.4 points per game, ninth) and rebounding (10.9 per contest, eighth).
This game will be streamed live on ESPN+ while live stats will also be provided. Those links can be found at the top of the webpage.
