MARTIN, Tenn. – The 2020-21 University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball season starts this weekend as the Skyhawks travel to Eastern Kentucky for matches on Sunday, Feb. 7 and Monday, Feb. 8. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. CST.
This marks the first time these two squads have met twice in a single season since 2011. UT Martin has won each of the last two meetings against the Colonels, defeating Eastern Kentucky by a 3-1 margin (25-18, 13-25, 25-19, 25-18) in its last visit to Richmond in 2018 before posting a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-16, 25-17) at Skyhawk Fieldhouse last season.
Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference honoree Logan Wallick shined against the Colonels in the last matchup, piling up a match-high 14 kills on a sizzling .444 attack percentage. Senior Kenzie Hinshaw has also performed well in her career against Eastern Kentucky, posting a pair of double-doubles (7.45 assists and 2.64 digs per set) in three opportunities.
UT Martin boasts a veteran-laden roster as eight upperclassmen return for head coach Jaclynn Wilson, who enters her sixth season at the helm. Overall, 11 players are back from 2019 as those returners have combined for 224 starts in their Skyhawk careers (113 last season alone).
Wallick's 302 kills topped UT Martin in 2019 while Karen Scanlon (2.27) and Jessica Reynolds (2.00) also averaged two or more kills per set. Hinshaw led the Skyhawks in assists (8.97 per set), service aces (26) and digs (284) and is also UT Martin's top returner in blocks (53). Defensively, Lucy Kaufman (273 digs) and Jamie Rys (team-best 3.26 digs per set) primarily filled the role of libero for a squad that went 9-7 in OVC play (13-19 overall).
Eastern Kentucky is coming off a 9-21 record and 4-12 mark against OVC opponents in 2019. The Colonels return four players and welcome in nine newcomers this season, seven of whom are freshmen. Returning starters for second-year head coach Johnna Bazzani include redshirt junior opposite hitter Jovana Bulatovic (2.06 kills, 0.66 blocks per set) and junior middle blocker Mikayla Logan (.185 attack percentage, 0.74 blocks per set).
