MOREHEAD, Ky. – Kayla Bryant was responsible for her 11th double-double of the season for the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team but it ultimately wasn't enough as the Skyhawks dropped a 3-0 decision (20-25, 15-25, 17-25) at Morehead State in the season finale today.
A senior from Louisville, Ky., Bryant achieved team-highs of 14 kills and 11 digs to go along with two service aces. Ava Peters posted 27 assists to also navigate the UT Martin offense while Dylan Sulcer scooped up nine digs for the Skyhawk defensive unit.
UT Martin hit .344 with 14 kills in the opening stanza but could not hold off the Eagles. Points by five different Skyhawks (Maddy Gladson kill, Bryant service ace, Kylie Surratt kill, Carly Mueller kill, Kristin Phillips service ace) helped UT Martin take a 5-2 advantage early. Two more kills from Bryant – sandwiched around an Abby Freund service ace – boosted the Skyhawk lead out to 9-4 but five unanswered Morehead State points soon thereafter gave the Eagles their first lead of the day at 18-15. Bryant supplied a whopping five more kills from that point forward in the set but Morehead State went ahead 1-0 in the match. Bryant had a staggering nine kills with no errors in 14 swings (.643 attack percentage) while Peters handed out 14 assists in the first set.
The Eagles scored the first five points of the middle set, taking a 9-1 advantage in the process. Surratt managed two kills in UT Martin's next five points and added two more points (kill, block assist) during a 4-0 Skyhawk run late in the set but Morehead State was able to claim a 2-0 advantage in the match. Bryant corralled five digs in the second set to lead UT Martin defensively.
Kills by Phillips, Bryant and Surratt led to a 3-1 Skyhawk lead to kick off the third set. The Eagles answered with a 5-0 run and eventually used a separate 8-2 surge to go on top by an 18-8 margin. UT Martin unspooled four consecutive points late – featuring kills by Gladson, Bryant and Phillips – to stay alive but Morehead State managed to close out the match. Bryant had four kills while Gladson was a perfect 3-for-3 (1.000 hitting percentage) in the final stanza.
Today's match marked the end of the Skyhawk careers for seniors Bryant and Phillips. Bryant concluded her collegiate career with 837 kills, 803 digs and 107 service aces (ninth-most in school history) while Phillips amassed 478 kills and 176 blocks at UT Martin.
