MOREHEAD, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team battled today at Morehead State but dropped a three-set decision (11-25, 19-25, 9-25) at Ellis T. Johnson Arena.
Maddy Gladson established a career-high with six blocks at the net today for the Skyhawks, who also received five blocks out of freshman Carly Mueller. Kayla Bryant led the team in kills (five) and service aces (two) while Ava Peters (10 assists) and Dylan Sulcer (nine digs) also paced UT Martin in their respective statistical categories.
A pair of Bryant kills gave the Skyhawks their first two points of the day but the host Eagles scored 10 of the first 12 points of the match. Mueller and Gladson teamed up for a block assist to temporarily halt the Morehead State momentum. Bryant added two of UT Martin's final three points with a kill and service ace but the Eagles took the 1-0 lead in the match. Bryant's three kills on a .222 hitting percentage in the opening stanza.
All 10 tie scores and six lead changes in the match occurred during the middle set. Back-to-back assisted blocks from Mueller and Gladson fueled the Skyhawks to take their first lead of the day at 5-4. A kill from Bryant and solo swat by Gladson pushed UT Martin's advantage out to 12-10 before two more Skyhawk blocks on consecutive possessions kept the UT Martin lead at two. However, Morehead State answered with a 12-4 run to close out the set. Gladson was a defensive menace in the second set, garnering five blocks in that stanza alone.
After the Eagles scored the first five points of the third set, a solo block from Mueller helped get the Skyhawks back on track. Morehead State scored 10 unanswered points midway through the set before a Mueller kill ended UT Martin's drought. Kristin Phillips (kill) and Bryant (service ace) would add points late but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.
The Skyhawks conclude the regular season tomorrow against the same Eagle squad as first serve is set for 11 a.m. CT on ESPN+.
