MARTIN, Tenn. – For the fourth consecutive semester, the University of Tennessee at Martin athletic department has set a new academic standard as the Skyhawks combined for a 3.31 cumulative Grade Point Average this fall.
The rise in academic excellence began in the Spring 2020 semester as UT Martin collected a 3.26 GPA. That number increased to a 3.28 GPA in Fall 2020 before a 3.29 GPA was posted last spring.
"This accomplishment puts the finishing touches on a great fall semester," Skyhawk athletic director Kurt McGuffin said. "Athletically, we won two league championships and rank at the top of the Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner's Cup standings. Academically, we set another record for highest departmental GPA for the fourth straight semester. And socially our student-athletes have aided in tornado relief while recently donating Christmas presents for local families. It's a proud time to be a Skyhawk fan as we look forward to maintaining that momentum during our winter and spring seasons."
A total of 261 UT Martin student-athletes garnered Athletic Director's Honor Roll status this fall, maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA. Since the AD Honor Roll program was initiated during the Fall 2019 semester, a total of 1,306 Skyhawk student-athletes have earned that title.
During the 2021 fall term, the UT Martin cross country/track and field program boasted the highest amount of AD Honor Roll recipients with 35. Following closely behind was the Skyhawk equestrian team (32) and the UT Martin football squad (31).
A total of 29 Skyhawk student-athletes recorded perfect 4.0 GPA's this fall. Fourteen different UT Martin athletic programs produced at least one student-athlete with an unblemished 4.0 GPA while the Skyhawk soccer team (five) was responsible for the most student-athletes with perfect 4.0 GPA's.
Overall, a dozen UT Martin athletic teams secured at least a 3.0 team GPA during the 2021 fall semester. Skyhawk tennis (3.75) accounted for the top team GPA and was followed by the UT Martin soccer squad's 3.56 GPA.
