
SKYHAWK BEACH VOLLEYBALL OPENS BATTLE ON THE BAY WITH PAIR OF TOUGH SETBACKS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The University of Tennessee at Martin beach volleyball program battled but the Skyhawks ran into a pair of hot squads on the first day of the Battle on the Bay tournament.
UT Martin began the day with a 5-0 setback to Florida Gulf Coast this morning before dropping a 5-0 decision against Florida Atlantic in the afternoon. Those two opponents are a combined 10-1 on the season while the Skyhawks are now 4-4 during the 2020 campaign.
UT Martin nearly earned a win against Florida Gulf Coast at No. 4 but Addison Conley and Kayla Carrell fell 20-22, 21-11, 8-15. Kenzie Hinshaw and Karen Scanlon represented the Skyhawks at No. 2 but dropped a 24-22, 21-12 decision. At No. 5, Haeleigh Paulino and Jessica Reynolds battled but fell 21-12, 21-19 while Hannah Phillips/Lucy Kaufman (21-16, 21-16 at No. 3) and Jamie Rys/Gintare Mackeviciute (21-14, 21-8 at No. 1) completed UT Martin's lineup.
The second match of the day provided the Skyhawks a chance to test out some new combinations as Mackeviciute/Phillips (lost 21-15, 21-15 at No. 2) and Kayla Long/Zoe Merriweather (fell 21-8, 21-6 at No. 5) each made their season debuts as a duo.
Paulino and Reynolds came closest to a victory against Florida Atlantic but the No. 4 tandem was defeated 21-18, 21-13 at No. 4. Carrell and Conley teamed up at No. 3 (lost 21-15, 21-11) while Hinshaw and Scanlon (21-11, 21-10) fell at No. 1.
UT Martin wraps up its 10-match swing through the state of Florida on Saturday, March 7. The Skyhawks will clash against tournament host Eckerd College at 11 a.m. before facing Palm Beach Atlantic at 3 p.m.
