MARTIN, Tenn. – Ten matches in five days lies ahead for the University of Tennessee at Martin beach volleyball squad, who officially begins the 2020 campaign with a stroll through the state of Florida from March 2-7.
The Skyhawks start their third season in program history next Monday in Saint Leo with matches against Erskine College and Saint Leo. A Tuesday double dual at Florida Southern College in Lakeland follows before UT Martin head back to Saint Leo on Wednesday for matchups against Saint Leo and St. Petersburg College.
An off day is set for Thursday before the Skyhawks ramp it back up with four matches as part of the 2020 Battle on the Bay tournament in St. Petersburg. UT Martin is pitted against Florida Gulf Coast and Florida Atlantic on Friday before matchups against event host Eckerd College and Palm Beach Atlantic are on tap for Saturday.
Skyhawk head coach Jaclynn Wilson returns eight players from last spring although the team will be without Logan Wallick (season-ending injury) and Justine Walker (redshirting) in 2020. Freshman Lucy Kaufman, who had emerged as one of the team's top players during the early practice season, recently missed extended time with an illness but has been cleared to play next week.
Hannah Phillips is UT Martin's most experienced returner, as the Orient, Ohio native is the only Skyhawk who has played at least two years of collegiate beach volleyball. Also returning for UT Martin is Kenzie Hinshaw (five victories last spring), Karen Scanlon (five), Addison Conley (four), Jessica Reynolds (three) and Gintare Mackeviciute (three).
Making their Skyhawk beach volleyball debuts this season are Jamie Rys (redshirted last season), Haeleigh Paulino, Kayla Long, Zoe Merriweather and Kayla Carrell. Though she hasn't officially suited up for UT Martin, Long does have NCAA beach volleyball experience as she played one season at the University of New Mexico, earning seven wins as a true freshman in 2018.
