
UT MARTIN BEACH VOLLEYBALL CLOSES OUT FLORIDA SWING AT BATTLE ON THE BAY TOURNAMENT

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A lengthy University of Tennessee at Martin beach volleyball trip through the state of Florida wrapped up today as the Skyhawks battled but fell to Eckerd College (3-2) and Palm Beach Atlantic (4-1) at the 2020 Battle on the Bay tournament.
The Skyhawks' No. 3 team of Hannah Phillips and Lucy Kaufman went undefeated today while Haeleigh Paulino and Jessica Reynolds contributed a victory at No. 5.
UT Martin's match against Eckerd College came down to the wire as three of the five decisions went to three sets. Phillips and Kaufman breezed through a 21-11, 21-17 win before Paulino and Reynolds struck for a 21-13, 17-21, 15-13 win at No. 5.
Two more five-set decisions followed but Eckerd College emerged victorious in both. Jamie Rys/Gintare Mackeviciute (21-15, 15-21, 12-15) and Kayla Carrell/Addison Conley (13-21, 26-24, 12-15) represented UT Martin at No. 2 and No. 4, respectively.
Kenzie Hinshaw and Karen Scanlon took part in the No. 1 slot, falling 21-14, 22-20 in a tight decision.
The Skyhawks kept things close against Palm Beach Atlantic but ultimately could not prevail. Kaufman and Phillips earned a 22-20, 21-15 victory to cap off a perfect day while both the No. 4 and No. 5 positions went into a tiebreaking third sets. Carrell/Conley (21-12, 19-21, 10-15 at No. 4) and Paulino/Reynolds (18-21, 21-11, 12-15) left it all on the court but were barely topped by the competition.
Mackeviciute/Rys fell 21-15, 21-18 at No. 1 while Hinshaw/Scanlon were defeated 21-17, 21-7 at No. 2.
UT Martin will take next week away from official competition before holding its home opener on Thursday, March 19 against Ottawa University out of Kansas. The double dual will begin at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
