
KANE CAPTURES FLAT MOP HONORS BUT NO. 10 SKYHAWK EQUESTRIAN FALLS AT NO. 6 FRESNO STATE

FRESNO, Calif. – In a battle of top-10 nationally ranked equestrian programs, the University of Tennessee at Martin began the spring semester with a 14-4 setback at Fresno State today.
The No. 10 ranked Skyhawks earned three of their four wins in the Western discipline today, two coming in horsemanship and one in reining. Kelby Kane accounted for the other victory, picking up her second MOP of the season with an 82-point effort in flat.
Horsemanship was the first event of the day as UT Martin took two of the five team points. Devon Woods edged out Hannah Way aboard Winston with a score of 74.5 points while Bailey Newlin's 73.5-point performance defeated Nicole Campbell on Jag. Lucy Eier (72 points), Tess Baumann (65.5) and Paige Benson (55.5) also represented the Skyhawks in the event.
In fences, Grace Rogers' 76 points were a team-high for UT Martin while the Skyhawk lineup additionally consisted of Kane (74), Abbie Hopkins (72), Savannah Metheny (65) and Tyler Anderson (38). However, No. 6 Fresno State was able to record all five wins in the event.
Hannah McDonald got UT Martin back in the point column in reining, securing 68 points to down Julianne Kelley's score of 67.5. Baumann came away with a tie after putting together 67 points while Noel Meadows' team-high 68.5 points were 0.5 points shy of a split. Brooke Bradley (68) and Emily Zegiestowsky (66) also narrowly fell by a half-point and point, respectively.
Kane's MOP highlighted the Skyhawk performances in flat. Quinn Reed equaled her head-to-head competitor with 75 points while Hopkins' 81 wasn't too far behind Kane for the highest score on the team. UT Martin's scores were rounded out by Mahalia Alascio (65) and Randi LaChance (58).
The Skyhawks return to action on Saturday, Feb. 8 when they complete their competition against UC Davis. The matchup began today with flat and horsemanship events while fences and reining will take place tomorrow.
