
UT MARTIN SOFTBALL TO OPEN TITLE PUSH AT OVC SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHP ON WEDNESDAY

The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will look to make a run at the program's third Ohio Valley Conference Softball Championship title this week in Oxford, Ala. Action for the four-day tournament begins on Wednesday, May 8 with the championship game slated for Saturday, May 11. This marks the fourth consecutive year that the tournament will be held at Choccolocco Park.
UT Martin will open action against the No. 6 seed Belmont on Wednesday, May 8. The game serves as a single-elimination contest at 10 a.m. with the winner entering the double-elimination bracket later that day at 3 p.m. against No. 3 seed Austin Peay.
The Skyhawks enter the tournament field with a 29-26 overall mark after posting a 10-12 mark in OVC play to clinch the No. 7 seed in this week's OVC Softball Championship. Overall, UT Martin has made the field to compete for a title 16 times under the direction of head coach Donley Canary. During that time, the Skyhawks have posted a 26-28 mark while winning the tournament crown in 2009 and 2012. This marks the Skyhawks second appearance as the No. 7 seed as the field expanded to eight team in 2013.
UT Martin boasts a senior class which features three seniors in Alli Fulcher, Gracyn McBride and Shelby Woodard. During the group's time at UT Martin, the Skyhawks have appeared in four consecutive tournament fields while tallying 123 career victories.
Offensively, the Skyhawks are paced by sophomore Paige Clark who leads the team with a .381 batting average, 35 runs scored, 61 hits, four doubles, four triples, a home run and 24 RBIs. Junior Hayley Short ranks second on the squad with a .313 batting average while the duo of Fulcher and McBride have combined to tally 15 home runs and 66 RBIs. As a team, UT Martin has tallied 129 stolen bases which ranks first in the OVC and sixth nationally.
In the circle, the Skyhawks present four strong arms. Junior Hannah Ridolfi (8-10, 3.41 ERA) leads the team with 98.2 innings pitched while the freshman pair of Erin Gallagher (7-4, 2.63 ERA) and Lexi Ray (8-8, 2.97 ERA) have combined to toss 185 innings on the year. Sophomore Caitlin Karo (6-4, 3.28 ERA) has also been an asset, pitching predominantly out of the bullpen as of late.
UT Martin is making its 23rd appearance in the event since the OVC Softball Championship's conception in 1994. The Skyhawks have posted a 32-38 all-time mark in the tournament.
