EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball squad dropped both ends of a doubleheader today against Ohio Valley Conference opponent SIUE.
Game 1
The first game of the day saw Blake Davis swing the big bat for the Skyhawks as he plated the squad's only runs while also tallying a hit and earning a walk. Jordan Stoner paced the team in knocks as he roped a pair of doubles. Also notching hits were Casey Harford, Reid Pope and Tyson Cox.
Sam Folks (3-4) started on the mound for UT Martin and tossed 5.1 innings. He allowed three earned runs in that span on five hits and four bases on balls while he recorded two strikeouts along the way. Zach Denney came on for 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball as he conceded just two knocks and issued three walks while fanning a trio of Cougars in the process.
Folks retired the side in the third inning as he induced three groundball outs to cruise through the inning on just 11 pitches.
SIUE broke the scoreless tie in the fourth as it put up a run to take a 1-0 lead.
UT Martin pulled ahead in the sixth as Daniels drew a five-pitch free base just before a Stoner two-bagger put both men in scoring position. Davis then roped a single to right field which allowed both Daniels and Stoner to score to give the Skyhawks a 2-1 advantage.
The Cougars answered back in the bottom of the sixth inning with a pair of runs to reclaim the lead and give the eventual final score of 3-2.
Denney entered the contest in the sixth and worked around a single to the first batter he faced to force a groundout back to himself and then fanned the final batter of the frame. He made quick work of the first two Cougars he faced in the seventh via a groundout and strikeout before issuing a pair of free bases. He kept a cool head though to force a flyout to end the frame. Denney faced little resistance in the eighth as he allowed a leadoff single but the runner got caught up in a pickle for the first out. He lost a seven-pitch battle to the next batter but reclaimed his composure to ring up the next batter and induce a flyout to end the frame unscathed.
Game 2
The trio of Sean Dixson, Stoner and Davis all rapped out a couple of hits apiece in the contest while Creighton Eldridge and Noah Thigpen tallied one knock apiece.
Winston Cannon (4-6) drew the starting nod in the back end of the twinbill and tossed 3.2 innings. In that span, he allowed 11 hits and six earned runs. However, the righty did not issue any walks and recorded two strikeouts in his time toeing the rubber. Jeff O'Doherty logged 2.1 innings of relief and conceded just one hit and one free base while fanning one Cougar in his shutout outing. Marcus Eusebio and Nick Wohlbold each tallied a scoreless frame of work. Each of the aforementioned players allowed only one knock in their time on the hill while Eusebio rung up two batters and Wohlbold struck out three.
Cannon worked a quick first inning out of the gate as he retired the side in order via a groundout and pair of fly ball outs.
SIUE worked its way into the scoring column in the second as the Cougars pushed just one run across to take a 1-0 lead.
Cannon found a groove in the third as he fanned the first batter he faced and followed it up with a groundout. He gave up a two-out single but struck out the next batsman to get out of the inning.
SIUE added on five runs in the fourth to push its lead out to 6-0 which would end up being the final score.
UT Martin looked to get something going in the fifth as Davis led things off with a knock to left field. Eldridge then roped a two-bagger to right to put both runners in scoring position with no outs but to no avail.
O'Doherty worked around a leadoff walk in the fifth to strike out the next batter before inducing a 6-4-3 double play to end the frame.
Eusebio was faced with a leadoff single to open the seventh but he sat down the next two batters on swinging strikeouts and ended the inning on a first-pitch flyout to get out of the inning.
The eighth saw Wohlbold fan the first two batters of the inning before giving up a knock to left. He kept his composure though to ring up the next batter to retire the side.
UT Martin heads to local foe Union on Wednesday, April 17. First pitch against the Bulldogs is scheduled for 6 p.m.
