MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball program is set to open Ohio Valley Conference play as the Skyhawks travel to Cape Girardeau to take on the Southeast Missouri Redhawks.
First pitch of the series will be on Friday, March 8 at 1 p.m. with the series to be streamed on ESPN+.
UT Martin (4-8) is coming off of a two-game skid at No. 15 ranked Auburn where they dropped a 15-9 contest followed by a narrow 2-0 defeat. Southeast Missouri is in the midst of a four-game win streak in which they swept Purdue Fort Wayne and downed Southern Illinois.
Leading the way for the Skyhawks is the duo of Casey Harford (squad-best .378 batting clip) and Jordan Stoner (.348 batting average, one home run and team-high eight RBIs). Sean Dixson rounds out the UT Martin batsmen who hit over the .300 mark as he is currently swinging to the tune of .306. The Skyhawks have been given the green light on the base paths as they have swiped nine bases in 14 attempts led by Crieghton Eldridge and Dixson.
Righty Winston Cannon (1-2, 4.34 ERA) is set to toe the rubber for UT Martin on Friday afternoon. He has rung up 16 batters in his 18.2 innings of work on the mound this season. Left-handed pitcher Sam Folks (2-0, 3.63 ERA) will draw the starting nod on Saturday with right-handed pitcher David Hussey (0-2, 10.22 ERA) looking to start on Sunday. The Skyhawk bullpen has been led by the superb play of Nick Wohlbold (0-0, 0.00 ERA and three saves) who has tossed seven solid innings of near-perfect baseball while sitting down eight opponents via the strikeout. Jeff O'Doherty (0-1, 6.23 ERA) has also provided solid innings of relief as he has only given up earned runs on one occasion (six earned runs against No. 15 Auburn) but has struck out a team-high 17 batters in just 8.2 innings of action.
Southeast Missouri (9-3) is led by OVC Co-Player of the Week Austin Blazevic as he has compiled a .395 batting average and an OPS of 1.121. Tyler Wilber (.370 batting average and nine RBIs), Alex Nielsen (.351 batting average and six RBIs) and Wade Stauss (.300 batting average and six RBIs) have also provided valuable at bats for the Redhawks.
Dylan Dodd (1-1, 2.76 ERA) will start for the Redhawks on Friday as he has sat down a team-high 16 batters via the punchout in his 16.1 innings pitched. Noah Niznik (2-0, 1.06 ERA) looks to get the starting nod on Saturday as he has logged a squad-high 17 innings of time on the bump with 15 whiffs on the year. Sunday will feature Daniel Bergtholdt (2-0, 3.31 ERA) who has clocked in for 16.1 innings and struck out 11 batters along the way.
