PAIR OF BIG INNINGS TOO MUCH AS SKYHAWK BASEBALL FALLS 21-6 TO EASTERN KENTUCKY

RICHMOND, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team fell by a 21-6 margin to Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Kentucky this evening as a pair of big Colonel innings proved to be the tipping point.
UT Martin (8-13, 2-5 OVC) was led at the dish by the senior pair of Jordan Stoner and Creighton Eldridge as both accounted for two hits and two RBIs in the contest. Blake Davis drove in a run to round out the scoring column. Sean Dixson and Blake Daniels each tallied a couple of base knocks while Ethan Whitley and Noah Thigpen notched one hit apiece. The Skyhawks worked the count multiple times to draw seven walks with Davis and Thigpen leading the way with a pair of free bases while Dixson, Whitley and Billy Edwards each drew one walk.
Lefty Sam Folks (3-1) started the matchup and went on to toss five complete innings. However, he allowed six earned runs off of eight hits but managed to fan five Colonels along the way. Jeff O'Doherty came on to log one inning of relief but was tagged for nine earned runs in his time on the bump but not before he sat down one Eastern Kentucky batter on strikes. Jonah Brody finished things off for UT Martin as he spent two frames toeing the rubber. He allowed just one earned run and whiffed a pair of Colonels in the process.
The Skyhawks drew first blood as they struck for a run in the opening inning. Dixson led off the contest with a single through the left side and was later able to move up to second on a failed pickoff attempt. A Stoner knock through the right side put runners at the corners. Stoner then swiped second before Casey Harford was plunked by a pitch to load up the bases with just one out. Davis then tallied a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Dixson to come home and give UT Martin the early 1-0 advantage.
Eastern Kentucky would put up a couple of runs in the home half of the first as the Colonels took a 2-1 advantage.
UT Martin looked to add on in the second as Thigpen opened the frame with a single to center. Dixson then beat out an infield single with one out to have a pair of runners on but to no avail.
Folks sat down the side in order in the second inning as he used a pair of ground balls to open and closed with an Eastern Kentucky batter caught looking.
The Colonels added on five runs in the third to push their lead out to 7-1.
Folks regained his footing in the fourth inning as he once again retired the side in an orderly fashion this time with a groundout sandwiched in between a pair of flyouts.
The Skyhawks rallied for two runs in the top of the fifth as Dixson ripped a one-out single up the middle followed by a Daniels single through the right side. A Stoner two-bagger to left center was good enough to plate both of the runners on base and allowed UT Martin to inch back by a 7-3 margin.
In Folks' final inning of work, Eastern Kentucky would put up one run to make the score 8-3 but the southpaw was able to record a pair of strikeouts in his last frame on the day.
UT Martin answered back with a run of its own in the sixth as Thigpen got things started with a four-pitch walk. Eldridge would rap out a double to left field and advance to third on the throw as Thigpen tried to score but came up empty. A Colonel wild pitch allowed Eldridge to cross home plate and made the score 8-4.
Eastern Kentucky put up a nine spot in the home half of the sixth to push its lead out to 17-4.
The Skyhawks pushed two across the plate in the seventh inning as Davis drew a free base followed by a Whitley knock to right to put men on first and second. With two outs in the frame, Thigpen worked the count again to earn another walk and load up the bases. Eldridge then tallied a single to third base and was able to advance to second on a fielding error as Davis and Whitley both crossed the plate and made things 17-6.
The Colonels were able to muster four more runs over the seventh and eighth inning to give the final score of 21-6.
UT Martin takes on Eastern Kentucky in Game 2 of the series tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. CST.
