
UTM BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER AT KENNESAW STATE

KENNESAW, Ga. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball squad split today's doubleheader against Kennesaw State as it dropped a narrow 2-1 decision before claiming a 6-4 victory to close out the day and the series against the Owls.
UT Martin (4-6) was led by Sean Dixson (three hits, one double and an RBI) while Robert Worley (two hits, one home run and two RBIs) and Blake Davis (two hits and two RBIs) tallied multi-RBI outings. Casey Harford and Blake Daniels both recorded a pair of base knocks and an RBI each. Tyson Cox collected two hits including a triple while Jordan Stoner's pair of hits rounded out the team in the hit column.
The Skyhawk pitching staff was paced by the trio of Nick Wohlbold, Dom Bazzani and Jeff O'Doherty who combined for 5.1 innings pitched out of the bullpen and did not concede a Kennesaw State hit. Wohlbold notched his third save of the season in Game 2. Austen Bullington logged 4.1 innings of work in the first game and gave up just one earned run along the way while ringing up three batters along the way. David Hussey (0-2) was tagged with the loss in Game 1 as he allowed an unearned run in his two innings pitched. Sam Folks (2-0) tossed 5.1 innings of baseball in the second game as he gave up four earned runs but managed to fan a trio of Owls in his time on the bump.
Game 1
Hits were scarce in the first game of the day for UT Martin as Dixson, Daniels and Cox all tallied one apiece. Daniels drove in the Skyhawks' lone run of the day while Cox was the only UT Martin player to draw a walk in the game.
Bullington put together a solid outing as he allowed just four hits, two walks and one earned run in his 4.1 innings of action while striking out three Owls in the process. Hussey took the tough-luck loss as he was nearly perfect in the two complete innings of his time on the mound when he allowed a hit which led to an unearned run. Bazzani came on to finish out the game as he clocked in for 1.2 innings of work. He did not allow a hit but issued a pair of walks and finished out his appearance with two whiffs.
The Skyhawks got on the scoreboard first in the third frame as Cox ripped a two-out single through the left side. Dixson then notched a base knock down the right field line to put runners at the corners in time for a Daniels hit to right field and gave UT Martin a 1-0 lead.
Kennesaw State tallied a run of its own in the fourth to knot things up at 1-1. The Owls pulled ahead in the seventh inning to give the eventual final score of 2-1.
Game 2
Worley swung the hot bat in the series finale as he racked up a pair of hits including a home run as he drove in two runs. Davis also collected a pair of RBIs on two hits while Dixson and Harford each tallied two hits and an RBI each. Stoner rapped out two hits as Daniels and Cox rounded out the hit column with one apiece.
Folks picked up the victory as he tossed 5.1 innings of baseball. He conceded 11 hits and four earned runs but managed to sit down three Kennesaw State batters via the strikeout. Jeff O'Doherty followed Folks and gave up a free base but whiffed a pair of Owls in his 1.2 innings of action on the mound. Wohlbold closed out the contest with two innings of perfect baseball. He rung up two batters in his time toeing the rubber.
UT Martin got off to a hot start as Dixson tallied a leadoff infield single followed by Daniels reaching via a fielder's choice. With a runner at first Worley hit a single to second base to put two men on. A Harford rope down the left field line to plate Daniels and move Worley to third. Davis then tacked on a run when he singled to center to bring in Worley and give the Skyhawks an early 2-0 lead.
In the third inning, UT Martin struck again as Stoner lead the frame off with a four-pitch walk just in time for a Worley jack to right center to push the Skyhawk lead out to 4-0.
Kennesaw State tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to inch back 4-2.
Cox ripped a one-out triple in the fourth just in time for a Dixson sacrifice fly to left field which allowed UT Martin to extend its lead to 5-2.
Folks retired the side in order on seven pitches in the fourth as he found a pair of fly balls followed by a first-pitch groundout to breeze through the frame.
The Owls collected a run in the fifth and another run in the sixth to make the score 5-4.
UT Martin gave the final score of 6-4 in the seventh as Daniels led things off as he was hit by a pitch. Stoner then notched a single to short before Davis singled up the middle to bring in Daniels.
Wohlbold entered the game in the eighth and dominated from the first batter he faced as he sat him down on strikes. He then forced a lineout and groundout to make quick work of the eighth inning. Wohlbold kept chugging along in the ninth as he forced a pair of groundouts to first base and caught the last Owl of the game looking to finish off the contest.
UT Martin heads to Southeastern Conference opponent Auburn for a two-game stand against the Tigers on Tuesday, March 5 and Wednesday, March 6. First pitch on both days is slated for 4 p.m. and both matchups can be watched on the SEC Network+.
