MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team dropped an 11-1 decision to Ohio Valley Conference opponent Belmont this evening to snap the program's three-game win streak.
UT Martin (7-10, 2-2 OVC) was limited to just one base knock on the day as Blake Davis tallied the lone Skyhawk hit. Blake Daniels drew one walk in the contest as Jordan Stoner was hit by pitch twice to provide some activity on the base paths.
Winston Cannon (1-4) took the loss as he logged five complete innings of action on the mound. He conceded seven hits and five earned runs but managed to fan five Bruins before his day was through. Zach Denney tossed one inning, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out one batter. Jeff O'Doherty was tagged for five earned runs in his frame of action. Trey Ricko came on in relief an inning of play as he gave up one earned run but rung up one Belmont batter in that span. Jonah Brody tossed a hitless inning to finish the contest as he issued just one free base and struck out one batter.
Cannon was dealing early as he retired the side in order to open the game. He rung up the first batter he faced on the day followed by a groundout to third base and fanned the next Bruin to breeze through the first inning. Cannon kept up his momentum in the second as he forced a pair of ground-ball outs followed by a strikeout looking to end the frame. He faced some adversity in the third as he issued a one-out walk but then forced a groundout and sat down the next batter on strikes.
UT Martin notched its only hit in the third inning as Davis ripped a single through the left side but would be left stranded on the base paths.
Belmont jolted into the scoring column in the fourth as the Bruins tallied three runs on four hits to take a 3-0 lead.
The Skyhawks put up their run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Daniels drew a five-pitch walk followed by Stoner being plunked by a pitch. Daniels then swiped third base and advanced home on a throwing error by the catcher to cross home plate and make the score 3-1.
The Belmont fifth saw the Bruins plate a pair of runs before they struck for five runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth to give the ultimate final score of 11-1.
The Skyhawks continue the series tomorrow with first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
