LATE INNING PUSH TOO MUCH AS UTM BASEBALL FALLS TO BELMONT 5-2

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision in extra innings to Belmont this afternoon.
UT Martin (7-11, 2-3 OVC) was led by Jordan Stoner (two hits and one RBI) while Blake Davis tallied a hit and drove in a run. Blake Daniels and Casey Harford each notched a multi-hit performance as the two racked up a pair of hits.
Left-handed pitcher Sam Folks drew the starting nod in today's contest and logged 7.1 innings of no earned-run baseball. He allowed just three hits and issued a couple of walks but fanned four Bruins in his start. Nick Wohlbold (0-1) was credited with the loss as he tossed 2.2 innings of relief and conceded two earned runs while recording one strikeout along the way.
Folks opened the contest on fire as he sat down the first two batters of the game on three pitches each and looked to snag the rare immaculate inning but on his ninth pitch, he missed the zone trying to get the batter to chase. He worked around a two-out double and a hit-by-pitch to force a popout to evade danger.
Folks kept up the momentum in the second inning after working around a leadoff walk to force a lineout followed by a double-play groundball to end the frame.
UT Martin got into the scoring column in the second as Harford opened the inning with a two-bagger to center field and then was moved over on a Robert Worley groundout. Davis tallied a sacrifice fly to center to bring Harford in and give the Skyhawks an early 1-0 advantage.
Another quick inning came for Folks in the third as he forced a flyout followed by a pair of groundouts. He then worked an efficient fourth inning as he received help from shortstop Harford on all three outs. The fifth frame of action saw Folks breeze through as well as he sandwiched another groundout to Harford in between a pair of Bruin whiffs.
Belmont matched UT Martin's run in the sixth to knot things up at 1-1.
The Skyhawks pulled back ahead in the sixth inning as Daniels ripped a two-out double to left center. Stoner then notched a base knock to center to plate Daniels and give the lead back to UT Martin by a score of 2-1.
Folks needed 14 pitches to cruise through the seventh as he forced a pair of infield popouts followed by a flyout.
The Bruins tacked on another run in the top of the eighth to tie things back up at 2-2 before pulling ahead in the 10th with a trio of runs to come out victorious by a score of 5-2.
UT Martin wraps up the series with Belmont tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
