The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will return home to beautiful Bettye Giles Field this weekend by playing host to the Skyhawk Hampton Inn Classic beginning on Friday, March 15 and running through Sunday, March 17. Tickets for the weekend are $5 per day.
UT Martin will open the five-game tournament on Friday with a doubleheader against Green Bay beginning at 3 p.m. On Saturday the Skyhawks will take on Akron at 12:30 p.m. before clashing with Green Bay again at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks will wrap up the home tournament with a single game against Akron on Sunday at noon.
UT Martin (12-10) enters the weekend looking to put the finishing touches on a long tournament portion of the non-conference schedule with its own hosted Classic. After playing in four different states to start the season, the Skyhawks are looking forward to returning home for five games.
In the team's most recent tournament at the Stetson Invitational, freshman Georgia Land paced the Skyhawks offense with a .462 batting average while tallying three RBIs. Sophomore Paige Clark also boasted a nice week, also picking up six base hits, while driving in a pair of RBIs. Paige Clark and senior Alli Fulcher (two home runs) were rewarded for their strong play in the Invitational by earning All-Tournament honors.
The Skyhawk pitching staff was also impressive over the past weekend with the trio of Lexi Ray (4-4), Caitlin Karo (2-2) and Erin Gallagher (2-1) combined to allow just seven earned runs in 27 innings of work. Ray currently leads the pitching staff with a 4-4 record while posting a 3.47 ERA in 40.1 innings of work.
Green Bay (3-6) is looking to simply play games after finishing just nine over the first month of the season. Bailey Schultz leads the Phoenix with a .429 batting average while Morgan Bihun has one home run and four RBIs. Kayla Schwebke paces the pitching staff with a 3-1 record and 3.60 ERA in 35.0 innings of work.
Akron (6-7-2) returns to the Skyhawk Hampton Inn Classic for the second straight season. Kayla Wulf paces the Zips with a .410 batting average, two home runs and 13 RBIs while Sydney Jascoe is close behind with a .378 average, three home runs and 13 RBIs. Adrian Smith leads the pitching staff with a 4-2 record and 4.07 ERA in 43.0 innings of work.
