MARTIN, Tenn. – Winners of four of its last five Ohio Valley Conference matches, the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team will look to keep the momentum going this week with a pair of Ohio Valley Conference matchups. The Skyhawks host Southeast Missouri at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29 before squaring off against Tennessee Tech at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2.
After UT Martin's recent surge, the Skyhawks now sit just one match out of fifth place and two matches out of fourth place in the OVC standings. UT Martin will attempt to replicate its recent home success this week as it has not lost a home match to Southeast Missouri since 2012 and hasn't fallen to Tennessee Tech in Skyhawk Fieldhouse since 2015.
UT Martin (9-16, 5-5 OVC) is coming off a road sweep last weekend, dispatching Belmont in three sets (28-26, 25-16, 25-18) and Tennessee State by a 3-1 margin (24-17, 25-15, 15-25, 25-22).
The Skyhawk offense was on fire in those matches, hitting a combined .352 thanks to Kenzie Hinshaw's 12.29 assists per set. Logan Wallick piled up 34 kills (4.86 per set) on a .352 attack percentage while Gintare Mackeviciute (20 kills, .417) and Karen Scanlon (19 kills, .474) also stood out for UT Martin.
Lucy Kaufman (30 digs, 4.29 per set) and Justine Walker (eight blocks, 1.14 per set) shored up the Skyhawk defense over the weekend.
On the season, Walker's 110 blocks lead the OVC and rank 14th in NCAA Division I volleyball. Mackeviciute appears in the OVC's top-10 in both hitting percentage (.296, seventh) and blocks per set (0.85, 10th) while Scanlon (10th with a .283 attack percentage) and Hinshaw (sixth with 8.73 assists per set) also appear in the top-10 in the league in their respective statistical categories. In addition, Wallick ranks 10th in kills (3.16 per set) and Kaufman ranks 10th in digs (3.31 per set) in league play.
Southeast Missouri (16-8) is one of three teams atop the OVC standings with an 8-2 record. The Redhawks enter Tuesday on a four-match winning streak after defeating Tennessee State (3-0; 25-13, 25-17, 25-18) and Belmont (3-1; 25-13, 21-25, 25-14, 25-20) on the road last weekend. Laney Malloy shined for Southeast Missouri with 31 kills (4.43 per set) while Claire Ochs (69 assists, 9.86 per set) and Tara Beilsmith (37 digs, 5.29 per set) also pieced together good weekends for the Redhawks, who lead the OVC in opponent hitting percentage (.149), blocks (2.30 per set) and service aces (1.81 per set, seventh nationally).
Tennessee Tech (10-13, 6-4 OVC) split at home over the weekend, downing Austin Peay (22-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-19) before falling to Murray State (21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 21-25) in a pair of four-set decisions.
