MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team saw Eastern Illinois complete a 12-point comeback after the Panthers made a go-ahead three-pointer with 13 seconds remaining in a 66-64 setback at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.
The Skyhawks took a 39-27 lead into the locker room at the halftime break and led by five points with under three minutes to go. After a Quintin Dove free throw nudged UT Martin ahead by a 64-63 margin with 31 seconds remaining, Eastern Illinois' Josiah Wallace hit a step-back three-pointer only 18 seconds later. The Skyhawks had two contested attempts in the waning moments but the Panthers evaded defeat.
UT Martin (5-13, 0-7 Ohio Valley Conference) received 16 points out of Kevin Little this evening while Delfincko Bogan pitched in 12 points and a team-best four assists. Quintin Dove, Derek Hawthorne, Jr. and Fatodd Lewis each nabbed game-highs of eight rebounds for the Skyhawks, who hit seven of their 11 three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes.
Wallace's game-high 17 points helped carry Eastern Illinois (12-8, 5-2 OVC) to the finish line. Mack Smith (14 points), JaQualis Matlock (13) and Cam Burrell (11) also contributed double-digit scoring outings for the Panthers, who led for only 7:05 of clock time this evening.
"We fought hard but came up on the wrong side of the win-loss column," UT Martin head coach Anthony Stewart said. "We got some good offensive production tonight but we just have to get stops towards the end of games. We have to get defensive rebounds and defensive blockouts in order to close out close games."
The duo of Hawthorne and Little combined for the Skyhawks' first 10 points of the contest. Parks accounted for five points during a 10-2 UT Martin run that resulted in a 31-20 advantage with 3:25 remaining in the opening half. Eastern Illinois chipped the Skyhawk lead down to four points but a Lewis trifecta and five points from Little in the final 1:14 of the half resulted in the 12-point UT Martin lead at the intermission. Little's 10 points led the Skyhawks while Smith had a team-high nine points for Eastern Illinois.
A Jailen Gill layup at the 14:56 mark of the second half kept UT Martin's lead at double-digits (44-34) before the Panthers unveiled a 13-2 run over a 4:06 span. Nine lead changes and two ties followed over the next 6:42 before back-to-back triples by Little and Bogan made the score 63-58 in favor of the Skyhawks with 3:26 to go. However, Eastern Illinois ended the game on an 8-1 surge, capped off by Wallace's eventual game-winning shot from 25 feet out.
UT Martin is looking at a quick turnaround, as the Skyhawks host OVC rival SIUE on Saturday, Jan. 26. Tipoff time from the Elam Center is set for approximately 3:30 p.m.
