MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer squad is set to begin its preseason practice and exhibition matches to prep for the 2018 slate.
UT Martin finished the 2017 season with a 6-11-3 mark and returned to the Ohio Valley Conference Championship tournament for the first time since 2015. The Skyhawks return nearly every player from last season with the addition of four freshmen. Head coach Phil McNamara will look to seniors Amy McGivern, Danae Kaldaridou, Maggie Burkett, Kaci Mitchell, Katelyn Colvin, Makenzie Crawford and Sara Ketis for their veteran presence on the pitch.
The 2018 squad, which officially began practice on Aug. 2, also returns four Skyhawks who have garnered All-OVC accolades in their careers. McGivern, Kaldaridou, Burkett and Kamryn Chappell have been named all-conference since 2015.
"We are looking forward to the season ahead," McNamara said. "Practice has been going very well so far. This group is working hard and has been getting along very well together as we had a small incoming class to mix with a large returning group. We hope that the returners will show their experience and lead by example while we also have seen the freshmen be contributors which in turn will keep the returners in check. At this early stage, we still need these two preseason contests to push our fitness and see where our strengths and weaknesses are. We are really looking forward to the two preseason matches next week and are anxious to get the season underway."
The Skyhawks have a pair of exhibition bouts to fine tune their skills. UT Martin travels to Lipscomb on Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 6 p.m. and then hosts North Alabama on Saturday, Aug. 11 at 12:30 p.m.
UT Martin opens its 21st season of soccer by traveling to Arkansas State on Thursday, Aug. 16. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m. The Skyhawks will play nine home matches in 2018, starting with Southwestern Athletic Conference foe Jackson State on Aug. 26. Conference action begins on Sept. 16 as UT Martin will look to make its 16th appearance in the OVC Championship tournament, held on Oct. 26 through Nov. 4.
