SKYHAWKS LAY IT ALL ON THE LINE BUT COME UP JUST SHORT AGAINST SIUE ON SENIOR DAY

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin and SIUE saw 39 tie scores and 21 lead changes during today's volleyball match before the visiting Cougars snuck away with a 3-1 win (25-21, 13-25, 37-35, 28-26) at Skyhawk Fieldhouse.

Today's match served as Senior Day as Megan Fair and Brooke Gyori were recognized for their career accomplishments during a pregame ceremony. The two Skyhawk seniors then played some of the best matches of their UT Martin careers as Fair slammed down a season-best 18 kills while Gyori equaled a career-high with 34 digs.

Karen Scanlon came off the bench to tally 10 kills for the Skyhawks while Kenzie Hinshaw (31) and Maddi Noble (18) combined to hand out 49 assists. Justine Walker also swatted away a match-high nine blocks as UT Martin fell to 12-16 overall with a 5-9 Ohio Valley Conference mark.

Mackeviciute and Fair each had two early kills to aid the Skyhawks to a 7-5 advantage in the opening set. SIUE immediately followed with a 7-1 run and would not trail for the remainder of the stanza. Fair had four more kills in the span of five points to help UT Martin pull within one point (15-14) but that was ultimately as close as the Skyhawks would get the rest of the way. Fair had six kills with no errors in nine swings while Gyori recorded 10 digs in the first set.

UT Martin seized control of the second set and put together a dominant win to even the match at 1-all. The stanza began with a 3-3 tie until the Skyhawks unreeled a 11-3 run which featured three service aces (two from Maddi Noble, one from Fair). The momentum continued throughout Walker provided two kills and an assisted block during UT Martin's 8-2 run to close out the set. As a team, the Skyhawks hit .346 (only two errors in 26 swings) and sided out at 84 percent (11-of-13) in the second set.

The marathon third set included 17 ties and 10 lead changes on its own. The Cougars jumped out to an 8-3 advantage but UT Martin continued to chip away, eventually taking its first lead of the set after back-to-back kills by Fair made the score 16-15. Two more Fair kills helped the Skyhawks stretch their lead to 20-18 before a 4-0 SIUE run. UT Martin then scored four of the next five points for match point at 24-23. Twelve more ties followed before SIUE broke a 35-35 tie with consecutive points. Fair collected six kills while Gyori amassed 11 digs in the third stanza.

UT Martin accounted for five of the first seven points in the fourth set but the Cougars would later use a 6-1 run to take a 10-8 advantage. The score was 18-15 in favor of SIUE before the Skyhawks shifted the momentum with eight of the next 11 points. The Cougars tallied the next three points but UT Martin staved off elimination thanks to back-to-back kills from Hannah Phillips and Walker. The Skyhawks had set point on two different occasions before SIUE closed out the match with three consecutive points. Gyori was responsible for 11 digs in the fourth stanza.

UT Martin's home finale is set for Tuesday, No. 6 when it hosts OVC rival Southeast Missouri. First serve from Skyhawk Fieldhouse is scheduled for 6 p.m.
