CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team hung tight with Southeast Missouri this evening before ultimately falling in four sets (23-25, 23-25, 25-14, 18-25) to its Ohio Valley Conference rival at Houck Field House.
          Â
Offensively, the Skyhawks (8-10, 2-3 OVC) were led by Hannah Phillips' 13 kills on a .308 attack percentage. Megan Fair (10 kills, 17 digs) and Kenzie Hinshaw (29 assists, 13 digs) each recorded double-doubles while Gintare Mackeviciute (seven kills, no errors in 12 attempts) also ignited UT Martin.
Â
Fresh off an adidas OVC Defensive Player of the Week award, Brooke Gyori was responsible for a team-best 18 digs tonight. Jamie Rys and Mackeviciute also helped guide the Skyhawk defense with 13 digs and a match-high five blocks, respectively.
Â
UT Martin used a 5-0 run to go on top by a 7-6 advantage in the opening set, as Fair delivered a pair of early kills. The Redhawks reeled off a 6-1 run to take a five-point lead but the Skyhawks quickly returned the favor with an 8-1 surge of their own to go ahead by a 20-18 margin. UT Martin led 23-19 before Southeast Missouri closed out the set with six unanswered points. Fair tallied team-highs of four kills and five digs in the first set.
Â
Phillips and Mackeviciute combined for four of the Skyhawks' first five kills in the second set. The Redhawks claimed a 15-11 lead but UT Martin continued to whittle its deficit, eventually drawing within one point on three different occasions. A Phillips kill and a Southeast Missouri attack error made the score 24-23 but the Redhawks recovered for the next point. Phillips dialed up five of the Skyhawks' 14 kills in the second stanza.
Â
The offense ran smoothly for UT Martin in the third set, as the Skyhawks hit .353 with only one error as a team. UT Martin scored eight of the first nine points thanks in large part to Phillips (two kills) and Justine Walker (one kill, one solo block). The Skyhawks soon tacked on a 6-0 run to go ahead by a 20-9 margin on their way to the victory. Fair had four kills in eight swings while Rys cashed in seven digs in the set.
Â
The fourth set was knotted at 6-all before Southeast Missouri seized momentum with six straight points as part of a 16-2 run. UT Martin did bounce back for a 10-2 run immediately thereafter but the hole was too steep as the Redhawks were able to close out the match. Phillips earned four kills in the final set but the Skyhawk offense struggled as a whole, hitting -.043 in 46 attempts.
Â
UT Martin looks to nudge its OVC record back to .500 on Friday, Oct. 5 when it hosts Jacksonville State. First serve from Skyhawk Fieldhouse is set for 6 p.m.
