Jay Murphy has spent two seasons as a member of the coaching staff as a defensive graduate assistant at UT Martin, his alma mater. Murphy has served as an assistant to defensive line coach Clinton McMillan and the strength and conditioning staff.

Murphy played in 44 games at UT Martin from 2014-17, tallying 101 total tackles, 11.0 tackes for loss, four quarterback huries and three fumble recoveries while defending one pass and recording a blocked kick in his career. He garnered All-OVC second-team honors as a senior after tallying 39 tackles - including 5.0 tackles for loss and a pair of fumble recoveries.

A native of Lewisburg, Tenn., Murphy prepped at Marshall County High School where he anchored both sides of the line. He was named a first-team All-District 12 AA defensive lineman by the Tennessean and was named the 2013 District 12 AA Lineman of the Year by the Columbia Daily Herald.

Murphy graduated from UT Martin in 2018 with a bachelor's degree in health and human performance.
