
Johnson Named Defensive Player of the Year; 13 Skyhawks Earn All-Conference Honors

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin football program was well represented as postseason awards were handed out with 13 players earning all-conference honors courtesy of the OVC-Big South Football Association. Highlighting the list was the selection of edge rusher Keyshawn Johnson as the OVC-Big South Defensive Player of the Year.
Along with Johnson earning Defensive Player of the Year honors, he was joined on the first team all-conference list by offensive center Josiah Tingley, offensive tackle Elijah Bowser, cornerback JaMichael McGoy, Jr., safety Jacob Stevenson, place kicker Cade Hechter and long snapper Hayden King. The Skyhawks garnered four second team selections with quarterback Jase Bauer, offensive tackle Jai'Lun Hampton, nose tackle Toby Camp and linebacker Tah Mac Bright Banda highlighting the list.
The tandem of wide receiver Bryce Bailey and linebacker Shamari Weir also garnered recognition with honorable mention accolades.
Bailey served as a leader of the wide receiver group by leading the group in receptions, yards and touchdowns. A native of Cochran, Ga., averaged 13.4 yards per catch while posting one 100-yard receiving performance in a career-best night against Southeast Missouri (Sept. 27), tallying seven receptions for 135 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw the first passing touchdown of the season when launching a 39-yard pass against Oklahoma State (Aug. 28) in the season-opener. The receiver also became one of just three players in FCS to record a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown this season.
A native of Houston, Texas, Banda made the most of his lone season in a Skyhawk uniform by earning all-conference accolades for the first time in his career. He played in all 12 games while starting nine while ranking second on the team with 66 total tackles. The hard-hitting linebacker recorded 4.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks while adding four pass breakups, an interception, forced fumble and a quarterback hurry.
Joining the team as a fifth-year senior, Bauer won the starting job out of fall camp and never looked back. The Ankeny, Iowa native fifth nationally in completion percentage (71.2 percent) while completing 205-of-288 pass attempts for 2,005 yards and 10 touchdowns. During his Skyhawk career, he started every game and proved to be versatile on the line with 23 starts at right tackle and three at right guard. He played in 778 snaps this season while earning a pair of BossHog Player of the Week honors. The Houston, Texas native graded out at 84 percent or better in every game while tallying 72 knockdowns. He was directly responsible for just three sacks on the season while protecting a quarterback which ranked fifth nationally in completion percentage (71.2 percent).
A native of Attalla, Ala., Camp made the most of his final season in a Skyhawk uniform by producing at an elite level on the defensive line. With 45 games played and four conference championships on his career stat sheet, he rattled off his best statistical season with 37 total tackles – including 16 solo stop. The nose guard tallied 5.0 tackles for loss – including a pair of sacks – while adding three quarterback hurries, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery. He also posted impressive numbers on special teams where he led the country with three blocked kicks – including a pair of PATs and a field goal.
Hailing from Detroit, Mich., Hampton started all 12 games for the Skyhawks at left tackle. He recorded 733 snaps this season while earning a pair of BossHog Player of the Week honors. In total, he racked up 72 total points – ranking tied for 10th in single-season history.
A historic season resulted in OVC-Big South Defensive Player of the Year and all-conference first team honors for Johnson. The Belle Glade, Fla. native was a menace for opposing offenses as he capped the regular season by ranking third nationally in sacks (1.13/game) and tackles for loss (1.67/game). Overall, he established a new UT Martin single-season sacks record (13.5), including five over his last three games and eight over his final five contests of the season. He tallied 20.0 total tackles for loss, including 3.5 in the season finale against nationally ranked Tennessee Tech. In that contest he added a career-high 10 tackles to earn OVC-Big South Defensive Player of the Week honors – his second of the season. He finished the campaign with 53 total tackles (30 solo), two forced fumbles and 10 quarterback hurries. Johnson had multiple sacks in four different games and multiple tackles for loss in seven contests, including 2.0 each against a pair of FBS foes in Oklahoma State and Missouri State. He becomes just the fourth player in UT Martin history to earn his conference's defensive player of the year honor, joining former standouts Danny Watkins (1976), Emanuel McNeil (1988) and John H. Ford II (2022).
After sitting behind another all-conference selection for two seasons, King took advantage of his new position as a starter on special teams and snapped it into an all-conference honor of his own. The Charlotte, Tenn. native started all 12 games as the team's primary long snapper and short snapper for a squad which led the country with zero allowed blocked kicks or punts. His specialists converted 95.4 percent of their kick attempts, including 15-of-17 field goal attempts and 27-of-27 PATs. Meanwhile, his punting unit averaged 41.1 yards per punt while adding two tackles on coverage.
McGoy capped off a record-setting career by notching his third career all-conference honors – including a pair of first team recognitions – while adding four consecutive conference championships during his tenure. Throughout his 51 career games played, the Chattanooga, Tenn. native set program records in both passes defended (48) and pass breakups (42). This season he tallied 37 total tackles while pacing the Association with 12 pass breakups and notching an interception. His best game this season came against Gardner-Webb when he broke the program's pass breakup record while adding a pair of PBUs and an interception.
Hailing from Gulfport, Miss., Stevenson capped off his Skyhawk career with all-conference honors after starting 21 games at safety over the past two seasons. This season he led the Skyhawks with 77 total tackles – including 31 solo stops – while adding five pass breakups, an interception and a forced fumble.
Tingley earned back-to-back OVC-Big South honors after serving as a mainstay on the Skyhawk offensive line for three seasons. During his Skyhawk career he was a part of four consecutive league championships while starting 36 consecutive games – a streak which ranked as the third longest in FCS – including 24 games at left guard and all 12 games at center in 2025. This season he played in 801 snaps while earning a pair of BossHog Player of the Week honors. The Cordova, Tenn. native graded out at 88 percent or better in every game while tallying 79 knockdowns. He was directly responsible for just two sacks on the season while protecting a quarterback which ranked fifth nationally in completion percentage (71.2 percent) and led an offense which paced the Association with 197.6 rushing yards per game.
Weir took advantage of his opportunity in his final season in a Skyhawk uniform and parlayed it into all-conference honors following a strong campaign. Hailing from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., he started in all 12 games this season at linebacker before racking up 60 total tackles and 7.0 tackles for loss. Over the course of six seasons, he played in 51 contests and helped the squad win four consecutive league championships.
