PADUCAH, Ky. – Grant Phillips made the second-biggest jump up the standings in the 92-man field today as the University of Tennessee at Martin golf squad completed the Racer Intercollegiate today at the Country Club of Paducah.
A junior from Marietta, Ga., Phillips carded seven birdies today on the way to a 69 (-3) – leaping 31 spots on the player leaderboard to finish in 16th place. His 217 (+1) for the tournament was good enough for his fifth top-20 placement of the season as he ranked second in the event in birdies (13) and sixth in par-4 scoring (3.97, -1).
As a team, the Skyhawks' 47 birdies finished as the second-most in the 15-team tournament. UT Martin shot a 296 (+8) in Round 3, placing seventh in the field with an aggregate score of 878 (+14).
Phillips' 69 was one of only 10 red scores across the tournament in the third and final round. Drew Williams' 74 included one birdie while Jaden Morrell (76, four birdies) and Luke Caldwell (77, two birdies) concluded the scoring for the Skyhawk lineup. John-Gregory Wilson produced all four of his birdies on the back-nine before finishing with a 79.
On the individual front, Luke Beadles and Bryce Harmon each finished with two birdies apiece on the way to a 77 and 78, respectively.
For the tournament, Wilson shot a 220 (+4) to finish just outside the top-25. The sophomore southpaw guided UT Martin in par-3 scoring average (3.17, +2) and par-5 scoring average (4.75, -3) in the 54-hole event. Caldwell tied Wilson for the Skyhawks' best par-5 scoring average (4.75, -3) before finishing with a 221 (+5).
Williams managed a 223 (+7), leading all UT Martin representatives with 36 pars and also equaling Wilson for the best par-3 scoring average (3.17, +2) on the squad. Harmon's final tally of 223 (+7) tied Williams while Beadles (229, +13) and Morrell (235, +19) completed the Skyhawk participation in the tournament.
"It wasn't the week that we planned to have going into the tournament but it was a week that I believe we can build on to finish this year strong," UT Martin head coach Austin Swafford said. "Our guys were a little off all three rounds and that put us in places where it's tough to score but I believe we got better and tougher this week mentally. I'm looking forward to seeing how we respond next week."
UT Martin's next competition will also take place in the Bluegrass State as the Skyhawks will co-host the fifth annual Carpenter/Chaney Classic with Morehead State. Named after legendary head coaches Jerry Carpenter (UT Martin) and the late Dr. Rex Chaney (Morehead State), this year's event is set for Saturday, April 11 at Houston Oaks Golf Course in Paris, Ky.
