PARIS, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin squad gained valuable match-play experience today at the fifth installment of the Carpenter/Chaney Classic, held at Houston Oaks Golf Course.
The Skyhawks advanced to the championship match this afternoon, narrowly falling 3-2 in an extremely tight matchup against tournament co-host Morehead State. Earlier in the day, UT Martin posted a 4-1 triumph over the Morehead State "B" team, who went on to defeat Bellarmine in the consolation finals.
Sophomore Drew Williams went a perfect 2-0 today as all five Skyhawks claimed at least one head-to-head victory in the event. Bryce Harmon, Grant Phillips and Luke Caldwell managed triumphs in the morning session against the Eagles' "B" squad while John-Gregory Wilson carded a victory in the afternoon matchup against Morehead State.
In the first match of the day, Williams came away with a 5&4 win while Harmon (5&4), Caldwell (4&3) and Phillips (2&1) also emerged victorious. Wilson also put forth a valiant effort before falling 4&2.
The championship outing was close throughout as two matches went into extra holes and two other decisions were decided on the final hole. Williams won 1Up and Wilson outlasted his competitor with a 20 victory to get UT Martin on the board. Phillips was embroiled in a battle before falling (19) while Harmon (lost 1Up) and Caldwell (lost 3&2) also represented the Skyhawks.
Overall, it was another successful Carpenter/Chaney Classic as this tournament – co-hosted by the Skyhawks and Eagles in honor of each school's legendary head coaches Jerry Carpenter and the late Dr. Rex Chaney – prepared both schools for a potential match-play opportunity at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships later this month.
"I am extremely proud of our team today," UT Martin head coach Austin Swafford said. "We were fortunate to get off to a fast start this morning and win that round. This afternoon was one of the most enjoyable and valuable days for our team this season – our guys battled and played with great focus. Yes, we came up just short by losing 3-2 but the experience gained is what we needed. Congratulations to Coach (Matthew) Martin and Morehead State on their win."
The Skyhawks will make the 20-mile trek to Lexington, Ky. for their next tournament – the Bluegrass Collegiate Invitational hosted by Kentucky on April 13-14.
