Skyhawks Fall In Series Opener To Morehead State

MOREHEAD, Ky.- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team totaled 12 hits on the night at Allen Field but fell to Morehead State 12-8 in the first contest of the weekend series.

Andrew Davis (home run, double, two RBIs) led the Skyhawks (15-14, 3-4 Ohio Valley Conference) in hits with three while Colten Payton (home run) plated a team-best four runs with two hits. Cameron Greene (home run, RBI) and Amari Conley (run scored) also added multi-hit games for UT Martin.

Jacob Sitton (3-2) went three innings and fanned two batters while Dean McCalla (three innings, two strikeouts), Will Turner (1.1 innings, no hits allowed, no earned runs allowed, one strikeout) and Gabe Bryant (0.2 innings, no runs allowed, one strikeout) made relief appearances.

Morehead State (13-16, 2-5 OVC) gained the lead in the early going, but the Skyhawks were able to strike in the fourth. Davis led off the inning with a single and Payton homered on the first pitch he saw to center field for UT Martin to cut into its deficit.

Greene started the fifth with a bang by hammering the first offering 420 feet over the right field fence. Davis helped tack on two more on a two-run shot (first home run of the season) that brought the Morehead State lead down to four.

Back-to-back scoreless frames from McCalla kept the Skyhawks within striking distance heading into the final three innings of the game. Payton singled to shallow right field and the speed of Davis helped him score from second base to make it 9-6.

The Eagles added runs in the next two frames and despite an RBI triple from TJ Grines and another run driven in by Payton, UT Martin was unable to complete a ninth inning surge.

First pitch for Game 2 is tomorrow at 5 p.m.
