MARTIN, Tenn.- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team threw eight straight scoreless innings, outhit the opponent 12-to-6 and made impressive plays on defense on its way to a 9-1 triumph over Mississippi Valley State.
Â
The bottom of the lineup went to work with Cullen Box (career-high three hits, four runs scored, RBI, triple), Amari Conley (two hits, RBI) and Bo Strickland (three hits, two doubles, three RBIs, two runs scored) combining for eight base knocks and five RBIs. TJ Grines (RBI), Andrew Davis (RBI) and Colten Payton (two RBIs) grabbed a double each while JT Popick and TJ Dunsford stole bases.
Â
Maxwell Schumacher (1-0) tossed a season-high seven innings and fanned a season-best seven batters. The bullpen didn't surrender a run with Gehrig Wright throwing a scoreless frame with a punchout and Garner Anderson finishing things off in the ninth with a strikeout.
Â
The Delta Devils (2-10) would grab the lead in the first but had no noise in the second when Schumacher induced three straight groundouts. The Skyhawks (7-7) knotted the contest up at one off a Conley single to right that plated Box during the home half. Two strikeouts and a runner caught stealing by Box highlighted a scoreless third.
Â
Schumacher froze the side in the fourth on three strikeouts looking to strand a runner on first and keep the game tied. UT Martin kept battling with two outs in the fifth and its persistence paid off when Davis and Payton each rapped RBI doubles to give the Skyhawks a 4-1 edge. The senior Schumacher worked a 1-2-3 sixth and his offense brought home three runs again in the bottom part of the frame. Box singled down the right field line to get Popick home and Strickland slapped a double to right field that scored Box and Conley.
Â
Leading 7-1 in the seventh, Schumacher concluded his day on a flyout and 6-4-3 double play. Mississippi Valley State left two runners on in the eighth after Wright entered in relief and forced a groundout to second. UT Martin tacked on two more runs off RBI doubles from Strickland and Grines in the eighth to bring the Orange and Blue lead to 9-1.
Â
Anderson made his first relief appearance of the season in the ninth and got a tremendous double play from his catcher Box. The redshirt sophomore caught a foul ball near the back stop and after falling down, fired a bullet to second to nab the runner trying to tag from first. With two outs, Anderson helped clinch the series win on a strikeout to conclude the game.
Â
The Skyhawks will go for the four-game sweep of the Delta Devils tomorrow at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
