
Skyhawks Fall 7-5 In Series Finale To Southeast Missouri

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning but fell 7-5 to Southeast Missouri in the series finale at Capaha Field.

Garner Anderson led the Skyhawks in hits with three and hit his fourth home run of the season (career-high). Andrew Davis (double) went 2-3 and TJ Dunsford (two RBIs) notched his fifth homer of the year (team-high). Catcher Colten Payton plated two runs for UT Martin (10-13, 0-3 Ohio Valley Conference) to bring his season total up to 25.

Maxwell Schumacher (1-2) went 4.2 innings while striking out three batters. Cason Sharp (0.1 innings), Gabe Bryant (two innings, three strikeouts, no runs allowed, no hits allowed) and Mason Little (one inning, no runs allowed) surrendered no runs out of the bullpen.

UT Martin got to work from the jump in the first inning when Davis singled in the second at-bat of the game, and then Dunsford crushed a homer to left center to give the Skyhawks a 2-0 lead. Southeast Missouri (18-7, 3-0 OVC) fought back and claimed the lead after the first two innings.

Payton drove in UT Martin's third run with two outs on an RBI single to left field for Davis to score and that cut the deficit down to three heading into the home half. Schumacher spun a scoreless third with three consecutive outs following a leadoff single.

On a 2-2 count in the top of the fourth, Anderson went yard to make it 6-4 and again Schumacher tossed a scoreless frame for the Skyhawks to carry momentum into the top of the fifth. Grines was able to come home on a Payton groundout and UT Martin trailed by just one going into the bottom part of the inning.

The Redhawks claimed a run in the home half to go back up two with four innings to play. Gabe Bryant entered in the sixth inning and pitched a perfect frame while also throwing a no-hit seventh to hold off the Southeast Missouri offensive attack. Little was able to strand a runner in the eighth for the Skyhawks to stay within striking distance with three outs left.
