CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team put up a fight against Southeast Missouri but fell in Game 1 of the weekend series at Capaha Field, 8-6.

TJ Grines (game-high three hits, stolen base, RBI), Cameron Greene (RBI), TJ Dunsford (RBI), Colten Payton (double, RBI) and JT Popick fired off multi-hit games while Garner Anderson tallied an RBI for the Skyhawks (10-11, 0-1 OVC).

Jacob Sitton (2-1) began the game for UT Martin pitching seven innings and striking out three. JP Nunn (one strikeout) and Gabe Bryant (0.2 innings pitched, no runs allowed) made relief appearances for the Skyhawks.

Southeast Missouri (16-7, 1-0 OVC) jumped out to an early lead, but Sitton responded with a scoreless second frame leaving a runner stranded. The righty tossed two more zeros on the board in the third and fourth.

UT Martin threw a counterpunch in the top of the fifth with its first runs of the contest coming from a Grines RBI single to score Andrew Lawerence and a Payton RBI base knock. Anderson was hit by a pitch with bases loaded for the Skyhawks to cut their deficit down to three.

Sitton finished his third outing of seven innings thrown this season by stranding a Redhawk 90 feet away from home on a flyout to close the frame. With two outs in the top of the eighth, Greene put pressure on the home team with an RBI single to left center that made it 6-4.

SEMO added insurance in the top of the eighth and despite a valiant effort in the ninth, UT Martin fell in the conference opener.

Game 2 is set for tomorrow at 2 p.m.
