BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Senior catcher Avary Makarewicz and sophomore pitcher Sami Scholtz have been named as the Ohio Valley Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.
The duo helped lead the Skyhawks to a 4-0 record in their own Skyhawk Invitational on the weekend, extending their current win streak to seven games.
Makarewicz was a force for UT Martin, batting .615 and turning in on-base and slugging percentages of .667 and 1.231, respectively. Four of Makerewicz's eight hits on the weekend went for extra bases, including two doubles and two home runs, while driving in a team-high nine RBIs. The senior tallied two hits and at least one RBI in each game, driving in four against Mississippi Valley and three against Saint Louis. She had the game-winner against the Billikens, a two-RBI single in the fifth that gave the Skyhawks the lead for good.
Scholtz was clutch for UT Martin this weekend, delivering the Skyhawks two saves. Over 4.0 innings pitched, she allowed no runs on three hits with only one walk and six strikeouts. With runners on first and second with one out in the seventh against Saint Louis, Scholtz entered the game and gave up just one hit and retired the final two batters, ending the game on a strikeout. After starting the game against Valpo, Scholtz re-entered the game in the seventh with runners on first and second again, but this time with no outs. She then retired the next two batters and once again ended the game on a strikeout, catching the batter looking.
This weekend, the Skyhawks will travel to the Gulf Coast to take part in the 2026 South Alabama Invitational in Mobile, Feb. 20-22. While in Mobile, UT Martin will take on Loyola Chicago, West Georgia, North Alabama and the host Jaguars.
