ST. CHARLES, Mo. – For the second straight season, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team fell on a late go-ahead field goal at Robert F. Hyland Arena as Lindenwood squeaked by the Skyhawks by a 75-74 score.
After the Lions hit a game-winning three-pointer with 5.5 seconds left for a one-point win on Jan. 11, 2025, Lindenwood's Mekhi Cooper scored on an off-balanced turnaround jumper in the lane with 4.5 seconds on the clock for the go-ahead bucket. That proved to be the final points in a balanced game where UT Martin led for 18:58 of clock time and the Lions led for 18:57.
Filip Radaković paced the Skyhawks in scoring for the fourth time in Ohio Valley Conference play tonight, posting 13 points in 19 minutes. Andrija Bukumirović added 11 points and a team-best six rebounds while AJ Hopkins collected 10 points in 20 minutes off the bench.
UT Martin was also led by Pedro Santos (nine points, career-best five steals), Afan Trnka (eight points, career-high nine assists) and Luca Colceag (eight points in 16 minutes) as the Skyhawks (19-7, 11-4 OVC) are now tied with Tennessee State atop the league standings.
Lindenwood (16-10, 10-5 OVC) was guided by Jadis Jones' 22 points. Dontrez Williams (17 points, six rebounds, six steals, five assists) and Milos Nenadic (10 points) additionally guided the Lions, who overcame a 23.5 percent (4-of-17) effort from three-point land by shooting 55.8 percent (30-for-54) overall.
"Hats off to Lindenwood," UT Martin head coach Jeremy Shulman said. "Sometimes this game is fluky – they hit buzzer beaters at the end of each half while we had too many missed free throws and turnovers. In close conference games especially on the road, those things add up to be the difference. We left a lot on the table and have to be a little more ready to play to start games. But this stuff happens over the course of a season – it's on to the next one."
The Lions jumped out to a 15-5 lead and eventually led by 11 points with 13:16 to go in the first half before an extended Skyhawk run. UT Martin scored 30 of the next 36 points, 10 of which came from Hopkins. By the time that Bukumirović made a fast break layup at the 3:48 mark, the Skyhawks led by a 40-27 margin.
Lindenwood ended the opening half on an 8-2 run, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Clayton Jackson that made the score 44-39 in UT Martin's favor at the break. Hopkins' 10 points led the Skyhawks while Jones' 12 points were the most first-half points for the Lions.
UT Martin held the lead for the first six-plus minutes of the second half but Lindenwood used a 10-0 run en route to a 64-55 lead with 7:44 left to play. The Skyhawks clawed back to take a 72-69 advantage off a Vladimir Khryapa three-pointer from the right corner with 2:30 remaining.
UT Martin's lead remained at three (74-71) with 52 seconds to go but unfortunately, the Lions scored the final four points of the contest.
The Skyhawks complete their road swing by making the short drive to SIUE on Saturday, Feb. 14. Tipoff from First Community Arena is set for 3:30 p.m.
