MARTIN, Tenn. – Playing its third game in six days, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team puts its winning streak on the line tomorrow at defending Ohio Valley Conference regular season champion Southeast Missouri. Tipoff from Cape Girardeau, Mo. is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The Skyhawks (15-4, 7-1 OVC) have won seven straight OVC games for just the fourth time in school history, joining previous squads from 2023-24, 2015-16 and 2008-09. UT Martin has also already surpassed last season's win total (14) with at least a dozen regular season contests remaining.
The Skyhawks are coming off a 69-55 home triumph over Lindenwood on Saturday. In that game, the stingy UT Martin defense held the Lions to 10.5 percent shooting (2-of-19) from three-point land and forced 17 turnovers. Afan Trnka finished with 17 points (one shy of a career-high) to lead four Skyhawk scorers in double digits – a list that included Matas Deniusas (14), Andrija Bukumirović (14) and Pedro Santos (11). Vladimir Khryapa also added five steals, becoming the first UT Martin true freshman to notch five swipes against a NCAA Division I opponent since at least the 2002-03 campaign.
The performance against Lindenwood moved the Skyhawks into the national top-10 in three-point field goal percentage defense (.272, fifth), scoring defense (64.16 points per game, ninth) and field goal percentage defense (.385, 10th).
The Redhawks fell by a 68-55 margin to SIUE on Thursday despite a team-high 14 points out of Luke Almodovar and a game-high 12 rebounds from Brendan Terry. Southeast Missouri - who tops the OVC with a +2.53 turnover margin - features a backcourt duo who had big performances against UT Martin last season in Braxton Stacker (20.5 points per game on 66.7 percent shooting, including 9-of-13 from three-point range) and BJ Ward (15 points, five assists and three steals at the Show Me Center on Jan. 30, 2025).
