EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Sophomore guard Filip Radaković registered the second double-double of his University of Tennessee at Martin career to help the Skyhawks to a 73-56 triumph over Southern Indiana in Ohio Valley Conference men's basketball action.
Radaković poured in a career-best 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting and a 9-for-10 effort from the free throw line. He also equaled a career-high with 10 rebounds for his first double-double since Dec. 15, 2024 against Champion Christian.
Andrija Bukumirović was also a gamechanger tonight as he posted 19 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. The freshman duo of Filip Petkovski (nine points on 4-of-4 shooting) and Vladimir Khryapa (seven points in 18 minutes) also gave UT Martin valuable offensive production.
The Skyhawks (13-4) nailed five of their 10 tries from three-point land in the first half and followed that by shooting 57.1 percent (12-of-21) overall in the second half. For the game, UT Martin also connected on 80 percent (16-for-20) of its free throw attempts. That proved to be a winning formula for the Skyhawks), who took over sole possession of first place in the OVC standings via a 5-1 start for the first time in program history.
The Screaming Eagles (3-13, 0-6 OVC) were led by Amaree Brown's 17 points while Ismail Habib added 14 points. Southern Indiana shot 29.4 percent (15-of-51), was outscored 36-12 in the paint and was outrebounded by a 45-28 margin.
"Tonight's game was so physical and I'm proud of our guys for stepping up," UT Martin head coach Jeremy Shulman said. "We find a way, no matter what style of game it is. I thought we guarded the heck out of it and dominated on the boards in the second half. We're getting tougher but we have a lot left to prove – there's a whole lot of basketball left to play and we're still working to get better."
After the Skyhawks scored the first four points of the game, the Screaming Eagles went on a 14-4 run – taking their first lead of the evening at the 15:55 mark. Bukumirović swished a three-pointer with 6:44 to go before the halftime break to switch the lead back in UT Martin's favor.
Southern Indiana briefly retook the lead in the waning stages of the opening half before another Bukumirović three-pointer with 10 seconds to go before the halftime buzzer gave the Skyhawks a 35-33 edge. Bukumirović scored a game-high 13 points (thanks in large part to 3-of-3 shooting from three-point land) while Cardell Bailey had nine points to lead Southern Indiana at the intermission.
The Screaming Eagles led 42-38 with 15:19 left to play but an 11-2 run gave UT Martin the lead for good. Five different Skyhawks scored during that surge with Khryapa providing four of those 11 points.
UT Martin's lead was trimmed to four points at the under-8-minute media timeout but the Skyhawks scored nine of the next 10 points to put the game away. Khryapa put an exclamation point on the 9-1 run with a one-hand tomahawk dunk on a fast break to push UT Martin ahead 62-50 with 4:32 to go.
Petkovski's fast break layup with 43 seconds remaining gave the Skyhawks their biggest lead of the day – providing the final scoring margin of 73-56.
UT Martin's next two outings will take place at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center, starting with a Thursday, Jan. 15 matchup against SIUE. The men's game will serve as the backend of a doubleheader with the women's squad and will tip off at 7:30 p.m.
